La Niña de las Amapolas
Tabaré Cardozo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tabaré Cardozo’s “La Niña de las Amapolas” tell the story of a beautiful girl who awakens under the full moon, curious to explore the world and discover what she needs to be happy. The girl sets off on her journey with nothing but the clothes on her back and a desire to learn. She washes her face with a flower and wears a light outfit scented with mint and cedron. The girl wants to give something to those she meets along the way, so she offers them marzipan and enchants them with her sapphire blue eyes.

At a carnival amongst marquises, the girl meets a puppet whom she leads through the night by the light of a candle. Together, they sing of the fresh morning. However, as the night wears on, the girl is left alone among the poppies where she dreams. The townspeople gossip about her, comparing her to the evening star and saying that she appears every February. Drunkards swear that a feline love roams the roads at night with her, while the townswomen claim that it's too late for the girl to find love, but that her eternal breeze will be a fairy godmother to the flowers.

The lyrics of the song describe the girl's journey through life and the people she meets along the way. It is a poetic representation of the magic of youth, the search for love, and the passing-of-time. The song speaks of the beauty and fragility of life, as well as the need for freedom and adventure.
