Main Title
Tadayoshi Makino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

'Neath a faltered sky; cross loamless plains, and watered blight
Ah! Where gone those days, once glory shone so bright?
Fallen 'neath baleful wings dark as night.
Ah! A moment give to me
Hark! Shall none hear this soul's tale
Of a land, benight?

Pitiful man whom death has undone
Leaned upon a broken blade, looks too, skyward
Prithee above (almighty one) be this thy word?
Cried out, begged for truth but no answer's sound be heard
Yet, now he sees the dragon's dogma
Unbound by time; all-binding, grand design
Land and skies, and seas yearn

Finish the cycle of eternal return
Finish the cycle of eternal return

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Main Title" by Tadayoshi Makino set a vivid and evocative scene. It speaks of a world that has fallen into ruin, where the sky is faltering and the ground is loamless and blighted. It is a world that has lost its former glory and been consumed by darkness, and the singer asks where those bright days have gone. The imagery is bleak, particularly with the mention of baleful wings dark as night, and the tone is mournful, with the question posed being whether anyone will hear the tale of this soul's plight.

The next verse speaks of a pitiful man who has been undone by death, leaning on a broken blade and looking upwards. He begs for truth or a sign from the almighty one, but there is no answer to be heard. Then, he sees the "Dragon's Dogma," a reference to the video game of the same name, where a character can gain knowledge from defeating mythical creatures. This dragon's dogma is unbound by time and a grand design that encompasses all things, with land, skies, and seas yearning for the completion of the eternal return cycle.

Overall, the lyrics of "Main Title" set a tone of loss, darkness, and longing for something greater. The imagery is vivid and poetic, painting a picture of a world that has passed into shadow.

"Lord of the Rings has all that but it isn't medieval.
Nor is Game of Thrones.
Nor is Dragon's Dogma.
Nor is Dark Souls.

Medieval means it takes place in medieval times, and only OUR Earth had those.
Unless it's based on our Earth and history it's not medieval."

That's not true, that's not true at all. See? When something takes place in a specific time period, it is in that time period, even if it's not in our universe. If a movie took place in a another universe and the year in that universe was 1964, well guess what? It's the 1960's, even if the movie was in another universe that is not ours, that doesn't matter, it's still the 1960's. That logic applies to Lord Of The Rings, Game Of Thrones, Soul Calibur, Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma taking place in another universe from ours and still being medieval.

God, I love this song both because it is so out of place, and yet so beautifully indicative of what a Japanese game this is. They should never have stopped using it as the main theme. I really miss when JRPG's used kick ass hard rock anthems to push their intros... Now I feel old...
