The group sings in a contemporary style, integrating R&B and jazz influences into their devotional songs and has 10 Grammy wins, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Award nominations. They won Grammy Awards in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1998, and 2003 and have collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Don Henley, Ray Charles, Queen Latifah, Joe Sample, Quincy Jones, Marcus Miller and Gordon Goodwin.
In 1980, Claude McKnight formed an a cappella quartet, The Gentlemen's Estate Quartet, at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, a Seventh-Day Adventist College, where he was a freshman. He auditioned fellow students for the hobby group. The Gentlemen were rehearsing in a campus bathroom (later said to be in Peterson Hall), getting ready for a performance, when Mark Kibble walked by and heard them singing. He joined the harmonizing, adding a fifth part, and ended up singing with them onstage that very night.[1] Mark later invited Mervyn Warren to join the group. The group performed under the moniker "Alliance".
The group performed in local churches and on campus over the next years, with members changing due to college's inevitable comings and goings. In 1985, the lower half of the group (bass, baritone, and second tenor) left upon graduating. At that time, Alvin Chea, Cedric Dent, and David Thomas joined.
The group was signed to Warner Brothers in 1987, and quickly changed its name to "Take 6" after a name search revealed that "Alliance" was already being used. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1988, won them two Grammy Awards and resulted in top ten appearances on both the Billboard Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Christian Charts. Take 6's swinging, harmony-rich gospel sound attracted a flurry of attention, and the group went on to record or appear with a number of luminaries, including Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder.
In 1991, after the release of their second album, So Much 2 Say, Mervyn Warren left the group to pursue a career as a producer. Joey Kibble, Mark's younger brother, was invited to round out the vocal lineup. The group added instrumentation to their purely a cappella sound beginning with the record He Is Christmas; Join The Band and Brothers continued their streak of success, and Take 6 amassed a total of seven Grammys and eight Dove awards, as well as topping the Downbeat Magazine's Reader's and Critic's poll for seven years' consecutively.
Take 6's 1998 release, So Cool, brought the group back to its a cappella origins.
In 2006 the group launched Take 6 Records and the 2006 release Feels Good was released on that label.
The group currently lists Nashville, Tennessee as its home.[2] All members grew up Seventh-Day Adventist.[

Climbing the walls not even knowing
What it was I had to find
Wondering if I ever would
There had to be
Some kind of something or someone
Who might bring out the best in me
Only the Greatest ever could
With a glow too wonderful to ignore
(Better sight) I took
(In Your light) One look
(Shining down) Through Heaven's door
I never thought I would ever
Stumble out of darkness and prize the view
But this time I found a Gold Mine in You (in You)
This is too much
Hard to believe my life is changing, Lord
But now I've got Your touch
I gotta keep passin' it along
Down (deep down) in my heart
I knew there'd be someone like You someday
(On the move) Hear me
(Knowing You've) Steer me
(Chosen me) Just lead the way
I never thought I would ever
Stumble out of darkness and prize the view
But this time I found a Gold Mine in You (in You)
...I have to admit
I never thought I would ever
Chance upon a love I could hold on to
But this time I found a Gold Mine in You
I found a treasure (no one can measure)
But it's true
I can't begin to calculate my wealth
And I never thought I would ever
Stumble out of darkness and prize the view
But this time (I found) I found You
(And finders are keepers)
I never thought I would ever
Chance upon a love I could hold on to
I never thought I would ever
Spot a ray of hope in the residue
I never thought I would ever
Find another prospect to interview
But this time I found a Gold Mine in You
I have to admit. I never.
The song "Gold Mine" by Take 6 is a love song that talks about the singer's journey towards self-discovery and finding true love. The lyrics start by describing the singer's state of mind - they are feeling lost and directionless, as if they are climbing walls without a clear purpose. They are looking for something, or someone, who could bring out the best in them. The verse suggests that the singer might have been looking for a long time and might have been losing hope. But in the chorus, the tone of the song changes as the singer sings about finding a Gold Mine in "You", the person they fell in love with.
The singer sings about how this person caught their eye, and they could not ignore the glow around them. The lyrics describe how the singer's life changes after they find this person, who brings them out of the darkness they were in. They express disbelief that they could find such love and admit they never thought they would meet someone like this. The chorus emphasizes the enormity of this love, comparing it to gold mining, and suggests that nobody can measure how valuable this relationship is.
The song's repetition of the phrase "I never thought I would ever" emphasizes the theme of surprise and shock at finding something they never thought possible. The song ends with the singer admitting that they are not going to let go of this love they have found, emphasizing that finders are keepers.

My late brother-in-law, a classically trained guitarist, band leader and arranger, left the planet listening to Take 6. He was not a religious guy, but these harmonies comforted him in his final days.
