Take Me To Church
Take Me To Church - Hozier Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week"We were born sick", you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom"
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
A, Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shinySomething meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness, in the soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Oh, oh, Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
The lyrics of Hozier's song "Take Me To Church" are often interpreted as a critique of organized religion, but the song is also a love song. The singer sings about a lover who has a sense of humor and is aware of the disapproval of others. The singer regrets not worshiping their lover sooner, but finds solace in the fact that their lover is the last true mouthpiece.
The chorus of the song is a plea to be taken to the lover's bedroom. The singer wants to worship and confess their sins with their lover. The singer sees their lover as the only salvation, and the only way to find heaven is through their love. The second verse speaks of sacrifice, and the singer is willing to offer everything to the lover, even their life.
Throughout the song, there is an underlying theme of hypocrisy and the corrupt nature of organized religion. The singer's church offers no absolutes, and every Sunday brings a new poison. The only redemption comes through the love of the singer's partner.
Overall, "Take Me To Church" is a love song that also criticizes the flaws of organized religion. It shows that the singer finds salvation not in the church, but in the love of their partner.

My girl introduced me to this song. It was her favorite song and it also became my favorite. She left me telling that she never loved me and she was just takingf whatever we had as a way to pass time. It crushed me however this song always reminds me of her and how I loved her. I hate myself for giving my time love and care for such an ungrateful person.
