I think I finally know the real reason why this song strikes me as bittersweet. It’s because no matter what path you choose, one of the houses (or one of the house leaders and their retainer if you recruit everyone) will always die. No matter what you do, one house will be killed off and there’s nothing you can do because it’s just simply war as all the students say. This song was (like I saw in a previous comment) played when the entire academy was truly happy and together as friends and perhaps even family. Then war comes and rips that all away from them.

What I find interesting is that a lot of people say that not having bisexual Claude/Dimitri is okay because "they're straight, just accept it" and yet I'm fairly certain that if they had made Claude/Dimitri only romanceable with M!Byleth, many of these same people would riot. They wouldn't accept the answer "they're gay, get over it".

These are characters and the writers are the ones determining their sexualities, not the characters themselves. Not to mention that the dialogue is the same for both Byleths. If we are meant to assume from the dialogues that these characters have romantic feelings for F!Byleth, not changing the dialogue means that they logically should have feelings for M!Byleth as well. The answer "they're just straight" doesn't work here cause the dialogue is the same for both. You either have to assume these characters romantically like both Byleths or are romantically uninterested in both Byleths.

Basically, Dimitri and Claude should've been bi or aromantic, period 🤷

In the end, my mother settled for being one of his many consorts, but I choose to believe there was genuine love between them. I suppose it’s a silly story to cling to.

There's a great line Hilda brings up post timeskip prior to the Battle of Gronder Field where she points out how before the war, they had good fun when they fought in that same field years before, and had the ball afterwards to celebrate, but now, all three houses were getting ready to actually kill each other there.
