Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Takeshi Kitano’s 浅草キッド reminisce about an earlier time in the artist’s life when he shared a small, sparsely furnished apartment with a friend he met while performing at a theater in Asakusa, Tokyo’s traditional entertainment district. The two of them had little money, and their only luxury was going to a local whale restaurant where they would talk about their dreams over cups of cheap chu-hai, a kind of low-alcohol cocktail. The bubbles of the drinks would burst as they laughed and made promises to each other, but they were not the kind of promises that could ever be kept. One day the light of the restaurant’s lantern went out, a symbol of their dreams fading away.
