Flicker Fade
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you should change your name
I'll love you just the same
And if you should run away
I would save your place
So you can go, go, go
If you want to
I wouldn't try and stop you
I couldn't say I blame you

Flicker flicker fade
Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same
You wonder why it always ends the same

When I said, "I hate that song
About fire and sex you love"
I couldn't tell you why
Why I did it, why I lied
I know it's wrong, wrong, wrong
It's evil but true
It's what I want to make you
(So I can say I blame you)
So I can say I blame you

Flicker flicker fade
Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same
Flicker flicker fade
Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same
You wonder why it always ends
You wonder why it always ends the same

You live your life, like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role.
You live your life, like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role (convince me)
You wonder why it always ends the same (convince me)
You wonder why it always ends
(destroy what you create)
Wonder why it always ends, it always ends the same

You live your life like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role

You live your life like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role

You live your life like you're not in control
Like you're playing a role

Flicker flicker fade,

Destroy what you create
And wonder why it always ends the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Taking Back Sunday's "Flicker Fade" are rife with emotional tension and reflection on the cyclical nature of relationships that never seem to change. The opening lines speak of unconditional love and loyalty, suggesting that the singer's feelings will never be dependent on external circumstances such as a name change or running away. However, this is contrasted with the self-destructive behavior that is repeatedly referenced later on.

The repeated phrase "Flicker flicker fade" hints at the idea of a brief and intense passionate spark that inevitably fizzles out, leading to disappointment and confusion. Despite the desire to destroy what is created, the end result is always the same. The lyrics suggest a sense of helplessness and resignation towards the dynamics of relationships, as if they are predestined to collapse in on themselves.

The lines "You live your life like you're not in control/ Like you're playing a role" speak to the idea of people constantly playing out the same patterns without being aware of their ability to change their circumstances. The singer is asking to be convinced otherwise, as they yearn for a sense of agency and control in their life. The final repetition of "Flicker flicker fade" solidifies the sense of repetition and inevitability surrounding the song's message.

Taking Back Sunday progressively gets better and better. They create songs that apply to their lives, and their fans lives in turn. These guys get older and so does their material, but so do the fans! TAYF was a different time for these guys and they were going through different things. You can't hate on them for not writing about break ups and fights with friends if they are married. Bands change and get better.

I even love that the merch now has onesies. I mean come on! :) this band grew up with me from high school to now. I couldn't understand people comparing the albums when they tell different stories.
