Nothing At All
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You wait in the dark for the music to soothe you to sleep
You swallow your fears
You become them eventually
You sit like King David
Watching women through the windows and walls
Chase your desires until you find nothing at all

Until you find nothing at all
Until you find nothing at all
Until you find nothing at all
Until you find nothing at all

I shake my heavy head and find ways to shift the blame
I hate the rules but I still play the game
I got an eye on the prize
Another on the clock on the wall
I get what I want until I want nothing at all

Until I want nothing at all
Until I want nothing at all
Until I want nothing at all
Until I want nothing at all

Overall Meaning

The song “Nothing At All” by Taking Back Sunday talks about two different individuals who are dealing with their own struggles and fears. The first verse talks about a person who seeks comfort from music while struggling with their fears. They eventually become their fears and indulge in a habit of voyeurism, watching women from their windows and walls. Despite chasing their desires, they end up finding nothing at all. The repetition of the line “Until you find nothing at all” emphasizes the emptiness and futility of the person's pursuits.

The second verse shifts the focus to the singer, who also has his own set of issues. He hates following rules but still plays the game, and strives to achieve his goals while keeping an eye on the clock. He eventually gets what he wants, but realizes that it's not enough and wants nothing at all. The lyrics illustrate the cyclical nature of want and desire, as well as the longing for a sense of fulfillment that seems elusive.

Overall, the song delves into the themes of emptiness, the fleeting nature of desire, and the struggles of individuals trying to find meaning in their lives.

This song is a vague reminder of how truly poetically outstanding this band really is.

Love the feeling this song gives. I could honestly listen to this on repeat for hours. I love the harmonies, the lyrics, the build, all the little back round noises, everything about this song. My favorite lines are "I shake my heavy head and find ways to shift the blame. I hate the rules but I still play the game." Love you Taking Back Sunday!

I just get lost in this song, I was driving with my dad through the country side in the UK with the sun shinning through the trees and this song reminds me of that moment, makes me feel at peace with my life, tbs may have changed but it's a good change for sure, you've gotta think this band has grown older their songs are more mature and down to earth and for that I love them.

@ashylarry4213

I noticed that TBS always has such dope songs at the end of cds. They're all good songs but the endings are always powerful. That's why their the best

@Pabzooloo

I think I get it. The album is called "Happiness Is..." and the last song is Nothing at All. So Happiness is Nothing at All. I only recently thought about it so idk if I'm slow or not but now it makes me think even more about the album as a whole.

@smileprettymusic
