One-Eighty by Summer
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Go on, just say it
You need me like a bad habit
One that leaves you defenseless, dependent, and alone
Go on, just say it
(Are you afraid to say what you want to, tell me you want to?)
You need me like a bad habit
One that leaves you defenseless, dependent, and alone
(Are you afraid to say what you want to, tell me you want to?)

Well, I hold my tongue, use it to assess
The damage from way back when it mattered
But nothing seems important anymore
We're just protecting ourselves from our self
And I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back...

Are you ashamed to say what you want to, tell me you want to?
Are you ashamed to say what you want to, tell me you want to?
Go on, just say it
Are you ashamed to say what you want to, tell me you want to?
Go on, just say it
Go on, just say it
Are you ashamed to say what you want to, tell me you want to?
Go on, just say it

I'm making the difference
It just seems pointless
With all the obvious lines all out of focus
Why can't you just be happy?
Why can't you just be happy?
And I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back down
I don't think I'll ever come back...

(Just come back)
(Just come back)
Go on, just say it
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
Go on, just say it
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
Well, I'll just say it
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
I'll just say it
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
I need you defenseless, dependent, and alone
(Just come back)
(Just come back)
She says "Live up to your first impression" (Just come back, just come back)
Well, my best side was your worst invention (Just come back, just come back)
Why can't you live without the attention? (Just come back, just come back)
Why can't you live without the attention? (Just come back, just come back)
She says "Live up to your first impression" (Just come back, just come back)
Well, my best side was your worst invention (Just come back, just come back)
Can't you live without the attention? (Just come back, just come back)
Why can't you live without the attention? (Just come back, just come back)
She says "Live up to your first impression" (I'll just say it)
Well, my best side was your worst invention (I'll just say it)
Why can't you live without the attention? (I need you defenseless, dependent, and alone)
Why can't you live without the attention?
She says "Live up to your first impression" (I'll just say it)
Well, my best side was your worst invention (I'll just say it)
Why can't you live without the attention? (I need you defenseless, dependent, and alone)
Why can't you live without the attention?
Why can't you live? (Defenseless, dependent)
Why can't you live? (Defenseless, dependent)
Why can't you live without, live without? (Defenseless, dependent)
Why can't you live? (Defenseless, dependent)

Why can't you live? (Defenseless, dependent)
Why can't you live without, live without? (Defenseless, dependent, defenseless dependent)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "One-Eighty By Summer" describe a toxic relationship dynamic in which one partner is so dependent on the other that they can't break away from the unhealthy cycle. The chorus repeatedly asks for the other person to admit their need for the singer, but the verses suggest that both parties are struggling with their own insecurities and emotional baggage. The singer is holding back their own emotions and trying to protect themselves from the pain of the past, but ultimately realizes that they may never fully come back down and be able to trust again.

The line "I need you defenseless, dependent, and alone" is particularly haunting, as it suggests that the singer is aware of the unhealthy dynamic but still wants to maintain control over the other person. The repeated refrain of "Just come back" and "Why can't you live without the attention?" further highlights the manipulative nature of the relationship. However, the line "Why can't you just be happy?" suggests that the singer may also feel trapped in the cycle and unsure of how to move forward.

Overall, "One-Eighty By Summer" is a powerful depiction of the complex emotions and power struggles that can arise in a toxic relationship. It highlights the difficulty of breaking free from patterns of unhealthy behavior and the pain that can come from holding onto past hurts and fears.

One of my favorite TBS classics ever, feels so good blasting and singing to this out loud like crazy, I just love it.

One-eighty is when things turn and become completely the opposite of what they used to be. In this case, Adam probably wishes he and his girlfriend will recover by summer after a period of misunderstandings and hardships. The title might also be somewhat reminiscent of You’re So Last Summer, which was a fan-favourite already back in 2004.

The last two minutes is one of the best musical buildups I’ve ever heard, it’s so chaotic and beautiful.

LycanSoul

you said it best yo!! surreal feel!!

J Cole

The whole song is amazing

frankenclouds !!

Well youve clearly never listened to hillsong worship. All there songs are like a 6 minute build up lol. Jokes aside you make a great point.

Colby Hammell

That's because it's almost an exact rip off of At The Drive-In's Metronome Arthritis.

Jeremy Christofer

@Colby Hammell you just ruined my fucking night. I was sure you had to be wrong.. but the melody is nearly identical for most of it at that part. I still love this song, but it makes me bummed cause I thought Tidal Wave and a few other singles off the newest were clearly rip offs and thought it was just cause they were running out of ideas, but this part being kinda stolen to blows. I bet I’ll get some hate from TBS fans for this comment though lol

It's been awhile since I last listened to TBS and last night I got to thinking abt them and decided to put in my old CD today and this is hands down my FAV song from them and IT SKIPS SO BAD (maybe bc I played it too much haha) so I had to come here and the first 2 comments (yours being 2nd) are like exactly how I feel. This song has affected me since high school, I remember the 1st guy who gave me an old burned copy of them...I just wanted to say I'm right there with you lol sorry for the novella.
