Set Phasers to Stun
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say yes, say yes, say yes, say yes
(Say yes, say yes, say yes, say)
I'm sorry it took me so long
I'm sorry it took me so long to come around
I'm sorry it took me so long to come around

Your famous last words started
Once your fingers hit the snooze
"Just nine more minutes please
They all know where to find me"

Every word that I said, what a big mistake
And the ones you left out are keeping me awake
Well, I will never make another promise without you
I won't ever make another promise with you in mind

So pace the stairs to your apartment
Like that's where you want to be (Where you want to be)
That's where you want to be (Where you want to be)

I'm sorry it took me so long
I'm sorry it took me so long (To come around)
I'm sorry it took me so long (To come around)

Well there's a secret I've been perfecting
I swore I wouldn't but you let me
I'm comfortably confused (And you)
You've gotten so removed
You know I, I could take the place of those pills
Ocean blue, paint it white
Now who you gonna call tonight?
Well I will never make another promise (Without you)
I will never make another promise (With you in mind)

So pace the stairs to your apartment
Like that's where you want to be (Where you want to be)
That's where you want to be (Where you want to be)

So pace the stairs to your apartment
Like that's where you want to be (Where you want to be)
That's where you want to be (Where you want to be)

Oh, we paint our sins on the ceiling
I keep them glued to my chest
It keeps me close like a promise kept
(Say yes, say yes, say yes, say yes)

If I talk in my sleep, will you just keep trying? (we paint our sins on the ceiling)
I might give it up if you just keep trying (well I keep them glued to my chest)
If I talk in my sleep, if I talk in my sleep, it's gone (it keeps me close like a promise kept)
Say yes, say yes, say yes, say yes
I'm sorry it took me so long
Say yes, say yes, say yes, say yes
I'm sorry it took me so long

So pace the (I don't want to stop, I just want to know)
Stairs to your apartment (I'm sorry it took me so long)
Like that's where you want to be (I don't want to stop, I just want to know)
Where you want to be

Where you want to be
(Where you want to be at)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Taking Back Sunday's "Set Phasers To Stun" are filled with regret and apologies, as the singer acknowledges how long it took him to come around and make things right. The opening lines of "say yes" seem to be directed towards the person he is speaking to, asking them if they will accept his apology. The second verse describes the other person's famous last words, as they hit snooze and delay the inevitable - a metaphor for the singer's own delay in realizing his mistake.

The chorus repeats the sentiment of apologizing for taking so long to come around, and also introduces the idea of making promises. The singer admits that he made a promise without the other person in mind, and promises to never do that again. The bridge introduces a secret that the singer has been keeping, and the confusion that comes with it. The other person has gotten "removed" from the situation, and the singer suggests that he could take the place of the pills that the other person might be relying on.

The final section of the song brings the metaphor of painting sins on the ceiling, and keeping them close to our chest. The singer asks if the other person will keep trying, even if he talks in his sleep, and promises that saying "yes" is all it takes to make things right. Ultimately, "Set Phasers To Stun" is a song about regret, apologies, and the hope for redemption.

(say yes, say yes, say yes, say yes)
I'm sorry it took me so long.
To come around.

Very much one of those songs with a "vibe from one of life's seasons".
Baggage. And a potent nostalgia.
Still very much in that season with this song, and I'm likely hours away from finding out whether or not that season is ending.
I will miss it.

One of my favorite TBS classics ever, feels so good blasting and singing to this out loud.

This song used to be one of my biggest comforts in life a couple of years back. Thanks for existing, TBS, not sure where I'd be without you

Same here. I always preferred this to the album title song

Patrick Schmidt

Probably not where you want to be. Sorry, had to.

This album and Louder Now are still the best TBS albums in my opinion. The lineup at that time was perfect and can't be replaced. I never grow old of this album. It ages like a fine wine and reminds me of a certain time in my youth.

Brent Appenrott

People always used to say this song was about a relationship, but I think it's actually about depression. So many lines always stick out to me when I'm going through a hard time. To me it's clear this song was directed at either himself or someone going through a hard time and asking them to try instead of giving up on life. Just my thoughts.

Gaming N Guitar

I like that interpretation, to me it just seems like a few lyrics really lean towards a break up especially at the end when it goes "I don't wanna stop you, I just wanna know." Seems like it's solidifying what is spoken during the rest of the song

Jeremy Sennett

What an incredibly unique band.

Christina Oubre

In 2021 this song + album is still my comfort zone. Just like it was in HS. TBS got me through some of the worst days, months, and years of my life
