Your Own Disaster
Taking Back Sunday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just think of this and me
as just a few of many things
to lie around
to clutter up your shelves
And I wish you weren't worth the wait
because there's some thing's
I'd like to say to you
I don't think that
you know what
you've been missing
'cause I don't think that
you know what
you've been missing

I dare you to forget
those marks you left
across my neck
from those nights when we were both
found at our best
I could make this obvious,
and you, you could deny me
all in one breath
you could shrug me off
your shoulders

I don't think that
you know what
you've been missing
'cause I don't think that
you know what
you've been missing

I don't think that you know
I said I don't think that you know
I said I don't think that you know what you've been missing

Hey, lush, have fun
It's the weekend
Hey, lush, have fun

Hey, lush, have fun
It's the weekend
Hey, lush, have fun

I don't think that
you know what
you've been missing
I don't think that
you know what
you've been missing

Just forget me
it's that simple

Just forget me
it's that simple

Overall Meaning

The song "Your Own Disaster" by Taking Back Sunday is a melancholic yet straightforward ode to unrequited love. The song speaks to a lover who is not ready to accept the emotional commitment of the singer yet continues to string them along, resulting in feelings of frustration, confusion, and disappointment. In the first verse of the song, the singer compares their relationship to random objects lying around cluttering shelves, emphasizing that they have an insignificant space in their lover's life. They wish their lover was not worth waiting for because they have things they want to express to them about the state of their relationship.

In the second verse, the singer talks about the physical marks their lover left on their neck during some nights where they were "found at their best." The singer says that they could make their love obvious while their lover could deny it with a single breath. They could easily shrug them off their shoulder and move on as if nothing had ever happened. The rest of the song continues to plead for their lover to understand the gravity of the situation and the depth of the singer's love.

Overall, the song communicates deep-seated emotions of pain and longing that arise from loving someone who does not return your feelings fully. It is a painful realization that some relationships are just not meant to be, no matter how much we want them to work.
