What missed often, is what is racist are those claiming racism! And B&W MistralS ...that wasn't ever meant as racist... But it would be interesting to know what black people at the time thought of it, and if they watched it? ...I kinda remember it on TV! But then my family where a very old fashioned lot! ...when we lived in Bahrain we had a 'house boy' which is basically a cleaner/odd jobs person. But my Uncle in the UK had a maid, who was a very nice British lady! And the last home my mother owed, she had cleaners, a gardener, and even someone to come in a do her ironing! lol... and they were all white.
I remember Michael Jackson's funeral, which disgustingly was hijacked by racists in one part... who were totally going against everything (good) Michael stood for! Even stating "we has USA for Africa, then the whites had to copy us with Band Aid"... seriously? Anyway, a normal thinking person stepped in pointing out how mistaken they were... due to their racism!
As for me.... I've lived in 10 countries, born in the Andes, brought up in 3 different countries, English is the 3rd language I learnt (and the only one remembered lol) Have had friends from all over the world! And don't classify myself as anything really, just a person of the world.... but which world? 🤔

What bothers me is having seen the performers of "SNL" having to rely on cue cards instead of memorizing lines for reading. Furthermore, some of the show's hosts over the years have done such an awful job of not doing well when performing in the sketches that have since become very cringeworthy. So I definitely have understood what "SNL" had become already.

Where's Turn-on? The infamous 1969 show that only aired one episode, and mainly on the east coast. So many west coast affiliates thought it was so offensive (by late 60's TV standards), they outright refused to air it. I actually watched the premiere broadcast while I was studying in college. Every couple of minutes I would glance up at the TV set and ask myself, "Did they really say that?" The news about its cancellation was next morning's news. It was cancelled mid broadcast although it aired to the end. The show was a lewd Laugh-In knockoff. Would pass with a shrug today.

Turn on and Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos were cancelled halfway through their first episode. Turn on’s debut episode was fully aired on the east coast, 15 minutes in Cleveland, and wasn’t aired on the West Coast. Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos was cancelled after 38 minutes of its debut episode after the head of Channel 9 called the show’s producers to get it off the air. It went to a commercial and didn’t return again. It featured animals having sex.

What those offended by "Love Thy Neighbour" never got was that Eddie came across as a racist buffoon whose schemes to discredit his neighbours never worked, and Bill was presented as more intelligent and had a hotter wife, so the black characters came out looking better.

I appreciate now how totally inappropriate blackface is. However in the fifties and sixties particularly we were very innocent with regard to race relations. My family used to love the Black and White Minstrel Show for it's lovely singing and relaxed atmosphere. In fact, I often wished they didn't wear the black makeup so I could see their faces! If you look at it with modern eyes, it appallingly racist, but so many of us never met black people and didn't understand how this would upset them.

@@benfisher1376 Agreed, and Spike tended to refer to himself as an Irish citizen who’d spent the early part of his life in India. He knew a lot about India but, by any accounts I’ve come across, never referred to himself as Indian.

Spike was frequently “edgy” in his comedy and courted controversy in his sketch show “Q”, with the Irish O’Lympics (a ramshackle athletics competition), and his Pakistani Dalek sketch. Plus there was another sitcom he was involved in called Curry and Chips, which was just as controversial as The Melting Pot.

Genius though he could be, Spike also had many inappropriate moments. Let’s call him a complex character ….

I feel compelled to comment again. I'm no mind reader but I don't think Norman Lear was trying to affend anyone or be preachy about race relations. He was just trying to make shows with believable charachers. Anybody who lived thru the 1970s knows the characters on his shows had the same hang ups people on those shows did about race and ethnicity. They were not meant to be anti-white or anti-black. They were meant to be believable but entertaining at the same time. If you watch these shows and really follow the characters you will see Archie Bunker and George Jefferson were opposite sides of the same coin. Archie Bunker was unhappy about his niece dating Lionel. Because he was black. Later on when the Jeffersons was on Tv. George Jefferson was originally unhappy about Lionel marrying a woman whose father was white and even worried their baby would be born white. Both shows the told viewers the truth about were we were back then that both black and white people had issues with mixed marriages especially people from the older generations like Archie Bunker and George Jefferson.

I think people may be missing a very very important and valid point. In certain scenarios the art of satire is used the same way political cartoons are used. It shows a very real and valid aspect of society that people may not want to speak of by poking fun at it and putting the topic on the table. In many cases the performers by no means want or expect you to emulate them or take them seriously. On the contrary.... the exact opposite is expected. It is honestly very weird how so many people just can't wait to talk about what offends them these days.... even going out of there way to point out things that offend them that are 50 years old. People are really missing the point that these old shows are valuable satire time capsules that now serve to show us exactly where humans were in our evolutionary progress. Also realize that opposites attract and that imitation is actually a truly sincere form of flattery. It might seem abrasive to you now... but the reality we probably wouldn't really understand how differently people have felt and thought historically without these valuable recordings.

Don't forget how the Nazis burned books to keep people from knowing history. It is very important we always have freedom so see everything ever documented for the purpose of knowledge and advancement. No question about that.

I was shocked to find out that a minsterl show ran on British TV for twenty years. I know there is racism in England but I never thought a show like that would be popular over there since most people in England are more accepting of mixed marriages than they are in the U.S. Don't get me wrong I love our country but even African American Servicemen with white wives have said people here in our own country had a bigger problem with them walking hand in hand with their white. Wives than they did in England. I am not surprised that a show like that would be popular in England during the 50s because a lot if Brits back than were fascinated by all things American even if those things represented America's dark side such as originzed crime for instance. I heard young British hoodlums in the 1930s, 40s and 50s liked to imitate American Gangsters. They saw in the movie. However I thought white actors would in black face would have gone out of style in England by 1968 instead of 1978. I'm not trying to sit in judgement I 'm supprised such a show stayed on the air for twenty years in England.

I was born in England in 1981.The black and white minstrel show was done before then. But I remember my mum buying marmalade which had little tokens of Gollywogs on them… until about 88/89. And while it is/was racist I think at the time it was not thought of as being so…. Not that I condone it, but I don’t think it came from a place of hate.

I had mixed race kids at my school. And my Mums cousin is married to a Black Briton of West Indian decent (he is English though. Born in the East Midlands). I never heard or saw any racism aimed at black people other than on tv… nearly all the racism I heard was aimed at Indian/Pakistani Asians… mostly from other Asians but sometimes from whites ….

It was still rare, in my view… though I must admit it wouldn’t feel that way to victims of it. and I I think the worst period for anti black racism in the UK was the 1950s… when the first wave of W.I migrants was settling in…. But since they were Anglo-phones and christians they were generally able to merge in with the white population easier than the waves of Muslim and Hindu Asians that arrived in the 60s and 70s.

I was in England but over the past 41 years I have met English immigrants , tourists, and other Americans who visited Great Britian and told me about strife between whites, people of East Indian descent and Pakistani descent. And I hope you will pardon me for bringing this up but I also rember meeting visiting Boy Scouts from England who were bitter towards the Irish mostly because if the IRA bombing campaigns and the tragic era known as the Troubles that began in 1969 and dragged on into the 1990s. When lived in Venice FL. From 1986-2018 things were kind of unusual between English and Irish immigrants. Most English especially those of Irish stock be it Orange or Green got along well with thier Irish born nieghbors in spite of all the unpleasant history. However during my last couple of years things changed. Well hope my reply wasn't too long winded and I didn't reopen any old wounds for you. Stay safe and healthy and when this awful pandemic is finally under control maybe I can come to your country as a peaceful tourist and aly of course.

While language might be a bit more risque on today's TV shows, many of those of yesteryear, would never be permitted today because of the tyranny of political correctness. Could you imagine a show like "All in the Family" today? Even many of the cartoons from the 40's and 50's would be banned, not to mention many episodes of the 3 stooges and Our Gang. Amos and Andy would be absolutely anathema. I've even seen some episodes of I Love Lucy that would prompt law suits and "peaceful" protests today.
