At The Gates Of Heaven
Talk of the Town Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been five days since I last saw your face,
And I'm broken but I'm alive.
It's been 5 days since I broke down but I swear,
I'm gonna get up off the floor before it's too late.

Before our light runs out,
Before our eyes glaze over,
Before our time runs out,
You were just too young to deserve this.

It seemed like yesterday was just another day,
But you were packed and on your way.
Ready to take on anything,
Even that which you can't take.
Then in a blink of an eye you stepped outside,
And saw that your world had changed,
And all you knew was that it was too late,
Too late to make a change...

Before our light runs out,
Before our eyes glaze over,
Before our time runs out,
You were just too young to deserve this.

I just hope that someday,
I hope you find your,
Way through all the souls that stand in line,
Waiting at the front gates of heaven

I hope you find your way

Before our lights gone will you come find me?
Before our eyes glaze over and you can't seem,

To find a meaning to make time move slowly,
But I know, you know, we all know, we can't talk about this

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Talk of the Town's "At The Gates Of Heaven" suggest that the singer is coping with a difficult loss. They miss someone deeply, someone whose presence was an essential part of their life. However, despite their grief, they are still breathing and healing. The lyrics also imply that they have experienced a breakdown, which they are now determined to overcome. While the lyrics do not suggest what caused their breakdown, they indicate that perseverance is the only option; that giving up is not a solution in the face of turmoil.

The rest of the song turns its focus outward, tracing the path of the person who passed away. The lyrics suggest that they were ambitious and optimistic, but they did not have time to realize their full potential. The decision to leave was sudden, and everything changed for them in a matter of an instant. The song's chorus then implores those who remain to make the most out of their remaining time. The lyrics ask them to find a way to ensure that their life's meaning is fulfilled, even if it takes them to "the front gates of heaven." The final lines of the song are poignant, as the singer speaks directly to the person who has passed, wishing them peace and the hope that they find their way.

Man that drum sound at 1:20 and 2:02 is to die for. Also love the chord change at 1:44 from F to F#

I love his music. The backup singers are very good and have a distinctive sound.

#45 wasn't bad, considering what a competitive time 1966 was in pop music. Nick Cenci had excellent timing when he chose to release this item from his vaults & coast along on the coattails of MGM's promotion. Don't forget, too, that it managed to compete well with MGM's own Christie followup, "Rhapsody In The Rain," which suffered from being ludicrously banned in many markets. But yes, agreed, it's a "killer record," one that might have done even better in the pre-British invasion era. Thanks for drawing my attention to it. I'd heard it before, but never paid much attention

When "Lightning Strikes" hit, Nick Cenci released much of the Co & Ce stuff, in an album while Coplix seperately released their own album. Both albums contained different material, but were both titled very similarly - Lou Christie Strikes Back and Lou Christie Strikes Again.

I love this much better than all the MGM crap. This one actually made it to # 18 on WHYN in Springfield, MA in early '66.
