Vessels
Tall Ships Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As the ship went down
I could see your face
through the bubbles, oh

As driftwoods journey began
ours came to a close

It was on my watch
when the creature struck
I'm sorry, eyh

A moments neglect
And we enter the sea

And I will sing for you

Our vessel we carry you and me
now sits at the bottom
the bottom of the sea
it has fallen onto a natural reef
upon which new things have grown

things so wonderful
that I have never known

Overall Meaning

The song "Vessels" by Tall Ships is a deeply emotional and melancholic track that explores the themes of guilt, loss, and acceptance. The opening lines "As the ship went down, I could see your face through the bubbles, oh" are particularly poignant as they set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is drowning in the sea and can see the face of their loved one as they take their last breaths. The imagery of bubbles and being underwater creates a sense of claustrophobia and helplessness that is intensified by the haunting melody of the song.

The next stanza "As driftwoods journey began, ours came to a close" speaks to the idea of how nature continues on despite our own personal tragedies. The singer reflects on the transience of life and how everything must eventually come to an end. The line "It was on my watch when the creature struck, I'm sorry eyh" suggests a sense of responsibility and guilt for what has happened. This is further reinforced by the lyrics "A moments neglect and we enter the sea". In this way, the song can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about the importance of taking care of each other and our environment.

The final stanza "Our vessel we carry you and me now sits at the bottom, the bottom of the sea" is a poignant metaphor for how our memories and experiences are contained within us and can never be truly lost. The fact that the vessel has fallen onto a natural reef upon which new things have grown implies that even from tragedy can come beauty and new life. The line "things so wonderful that I have never known" is particularly powerful as it suggests that even in our darkest moments, there is the potential for growth and healing.

This piece of art. .
It’s not like others. .——
It’s nothing like others. ——
It just….—- : the idea of comparison is just absurd.

When I listen to this, I feel the creativity that bore it was [oh crap I feel like such a twat saying] the closest version to divine creation or inspiration that I’ve been fortunate enough to to witness in the 21st century. I remember listening to all the other tracks of Tall Ships and they were just nothing like this.

Were they possessed by a god when they wrote this?

“The vessel that carried you and me now sits at the bottom, the bottom of the sea- it’s formed a natural reef on which new things have grown, things so wonderful that I have never known”.

Those are only the lyrics!!! The music itself is something else.

Someone I loved died a few years ago. This track continues to bring catharsis, and meaning to so many emotions, thoughts and feelings than should be possible in the five minutes and forty eight seconds of which this lasts.

“And I———
————— will sing to you”
