Half Full Glass Of Wine
Tame Impala Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said you wouldn't be home late tonight
I gave up waiting at seventeen past midnight
Now my only company's a half full glass of wine

Leave me no choice but to plot my revenge
You leave me no choice but to plot my revenge

It's been so long since I held your hand
You don't know how hard it can be

Thank God that I've been blessed with a patient mind
'Cause what I want to happen won't happen in a very long time
Now my only company's a half full glass of wine

Leave me no choice but to plot my revenge
Leave me no choice but to plot my revenge
Leave me no choice but to plot my revenge, alright

It's been so long since I held your hand

You don't know how hard it can be
You don't know how hard it can be

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tame Impala's Half Full Glass Of Wine depict a person who has been left waiting for their significant other who is out, after they promised to be home earlier. It's past midnight, and the person has given up waiting and turned to a half-full glass of wine for comfort. The frustration and loneliness come out as the person declares they have no choice but to plot their revenge. This is a statement that reflects their sense of powerlessness in that moment, as they are too hurt to consider anything else. The song highlights the feeling of being stuck in a situation with no immediate solution, so all they can think of is to plot the next move.

Throughout the song, the person bemoans the lack of affection they are receiving, as evidenced by the line, "It's been so long since I've held your hand, you don't know how hard it can be." This line compounded with the chorus indicate that the loneliness is not just due to the significant other not showing up, but represents deeper-seated issues that have been ongoing for a while, that have resulted in one-sidedness and disregard for the other person's feelings.

In conclusion, the song is about the emotions one experiences during a one-sided relationship in which the other person emotionally detaches themselves from the relationship.

@wolferthehawkeye

I just discovered these guys a few minutes ago.  I'm a 56 year old Prog Rock guitarist and Yes disciple.  This band is awesome.  This is so groovy, creative, both original and retro.  Reminds me a little of early Floyd or Syd Barret on "The Madcap Laughs."  I guess it's the brainchild of one guy, Kevin Parker.  I think my faith in modern music has been restored.

@Charlotte-ro9pf

+Smedley Butler Jr. Ditto. There are some very talented modern bands out there. Coming from a fellow Yes enthusiast :)

@MrBrno

+Smedley Butler Jr. They changed their sound from Rock to Pop actually, it's a shame.
