Is It True
Tame Impala Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were hangin' in the morning
Feelin' all different kinds of things
We were talkin' about everything
From the past to the happenin'
We started talkin' 'bout devotion
The kind that goes on eternally
And I tell her I'm in love with her
But how can I know that I'll always be?

She just said, "Is it true? Is it true? Tell me now"
It's a promise I can't make and I won't validate
Was I in some kind of mood? I don't know, I don't care
Now I'm sleepin' in my room, here I am, back again
She's in my

I was happy just listening
No intention to be mentioning
We started talkin' 'bout the future
'Bout the notion I was motioning
I'm just so terrified to face up
Like any moment I might wake up
'Cause she's the only thing I think of
I told my mother that I love her

She just said, "Is it true? Is it true? Tell me now"
It's a promise I can't make and I won't validate
Was I being immature? I don't know, I don't care
Now I'm sleeping in my room, here I am, back again
She's in my
In my

I said, "We'll see"
We'll see
In my
We'll see

Oh, we'll see
We'll see
We'll see, we'll see, we'll see
See how we go
Until we know what the future holds

Ah, we'll see

We'll see
We'll see, we'll see, we'll see

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tame Impala's "Is It True" seemingly tackle the uncertainties and anxieties of a person in a romantic relationship, particularly in committing to someone for life. The first verse presents a casual conversation between the two, which gradually became more intimate. Kevin Parker, the singer, tells the girl that he loves her, but immediately questions whether he could guarantee that feeling would last for eternity. The chorus repeats the phrase "Is it true?" as though the girl wants assurance that his words of affection were indeed authentic. However, Parker cannot give that pledge and says, "It's a promise I can't make and I won't validate."

The second verse still exposes the singer's hesitations, even though "I'm just so terrified to face up" about it. He stresses that the girl is the only thing he thinks of, and even told his mother that he loved her. Nevertheless, the girl only queries him with "Is it true?" and Parker responds again, "We'll see. We'll see." The repetition of "We'll see" emphasizes the idea that commitment is a gradual process, which cannot be forced. Regardless of how it ends, both parties must take the necessary steps to ensure that they recognize where they are heading.

Overall, "Is It True" lyrically showcases the emotional journey of a character who grapples with self-doubt and fear of commitment. The lyrics particularly emphasize this in the line "I'm just so terrified to face up/Like any moment I might wake up" which encapsulates the idea of being caught up in a dream of love versus the reality of committing to it. Consequently, the song becomes a reflection of the complexities that come with relationships, making it relatable to many.

Man the drummer Kevin Parker is so good. I also love their guitarist Kevin Parker, but while the bass is pretty good and Kevin Parker is very talented. The vocals by Kevin Parker are the best part by far.
