Help Me Make It Through the Night
Tammy Wynette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take the ribbon from your hair
Shake it loose and let it fall
Layin' soft upon my skin
Like the shadows on the wall

Come and lay down by my side
Till the early mornin' light
All I'm takin' is your time
Help me make it through the night

I don't care who's right or wrong
I don't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
Lord tonight I need a friend

Yesterday is dead and gone

And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone

Overall Meaning

"Help Me Make It Through the Night" is one of the most famous songs by Tammy Wynette, which was written by Kris Kristofferson. The lyrics of the song can be interpreted in different ways, but the most common one is that the singer is longing for the company of a lover to help her get through a difficult night. The use of imagery in the lyrics is quite vivid, as it paints a picture of a woman who is feeling lonely and vulnerable, and wants someone to be there for her.

In the first verse, the singer asks her lover to take off the ribbon from her hair, and let it fall on her skin. This can be seen as a metaphor for letting go of one's inhibitions, and being vulnerable with someone else. The shadows on the wall evoke a sense of intimacy and closeness, and the singer invites her lover to lay with her till the morning light. She is not demanding anything from him, but simply asking for his time, which shows her need for companionship and emotional support.

The second verse of the song is more existential in nature, as the singer reflects on the transience of life, and the futility of trying to understand it. She does not want to dwell on the past or worry about the future, but simply wants to be in the present moment with her lover. The line "let the devil take tomorrow" suggests a willingness to let go of one's fears and concerns, and surrender to the moment. The final line of the verse "Lord tonight I need a friend" highlights the singer's vulnerability and need for emotional support.

Dolores burd

You got that that right! I was listening to the other artists while looking for Tammy's and there's no comparison. I just watched the movie, George and Tammy and I must say both actors did an incredible job singing their great songs as well as portraying the singers. I've watched it several times over because it's so good. Even the punk she married after George was good because I couldn't stand him! Lol! What a life and what a love between the two.
