Set Me Free
Tammy Wynette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you think you've had enough
If you think our life's been rough
Why not take your love line off of me
And set me free
If you think our love's all wrong
And you feel the fire is gone
If I'm not what you'd like for me to be
Set me free
Set me free
And let me fly like a bluebird fly in high
Release the chains that bind me to be
Set me free
But you can't like to hold on
Onto love till it grows cold
And you held on much too long to me
So set me free
Set me free and let me fly
Like a bluebird fly in high

Release the chains that bind me to be
Set me free set me free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tammy Wynette's song Set Me Free are about a relationship that has gone sour and one partner wants to end it. The singer is asking the other person to let them go and move on from the failed relationship. The first verse is directed towards the partner who may have had enough of the singer and their relationship. The singer is offering an easy way out for them by telling them to take their love elsewhere and set her free. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that their relationship isn't working anymore and that they can't be what the other person wants them to be. The chorus is the singer's plea to be let go, to be free to live and love on their own terms. They want to spread their wings and fly like a bluebird and be released from the chains of a relationship that has grown cold.

She maintained her good looks, never put in weight, her voice was golden throughout.

So nice to hear Tammy's uniquely beautiful voice so early on in her career. Just wish the beginning of the recording wasn't clipped off.

@MadMax-lo1lm

A few seconds of instrumental at the beginning were cut off due to a scratch on the vinyl and maybe a fraction of a second of the "i" in "If."

My fifth grade teacher (she was about 22-24 at the time) could've been her twin. Even my parents commented after meeting her how beautiful she was and how she looked so much like Tammy Wynette? And she knew she was a head turner and she had fun with it with us!!! (Can't do that now I'm afraid??) What was even better was she actually was a very good teacher, she truly had 'The Gift' for it?
