Sweet Dreams
Tammy Wynette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweet dreams of you every night I go through
Why can't I forget you and start my life anew
Instead of having sweet dreams about you
You you don't love me it's plain I should know I'll never wear your name
I I should hate you the whole night through instead of having sweet dreams about you
Sweet dreams of you every night I go through
Why can't I stop loving you and find somebody new
Instead of having sweet dreams about you instead of having sweet dreams about you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tammy Wynette's song "Sweet Dreams" express the painful and persistent longing for someone who doesn't reciprocate love. The first two lines reveal the theme of the song - the singer cannot stop dreaming of someone, even though they want to move on from that person. The line "Why can't I forget you and start my life anew" expresses the singer's desire to move on, but the hold that the person has on them seems inescapable.

The second stanza hints at the reasons for the singer's love being unreciprocated. The lines "You don't love me it's plain I should know, I'll never wear your name" suggest that the singer isn't loved by the person they're dreaming of, and that they won't ever be committed to each other. Despite this realization, the singer cannot escape their longing for the person; they should hate them, but instead they have sweet dreams about them. The final stanza is a repetition of the first, emphasizing the singer's inability to forget the person they dream about every night.

When anyone takes on a Patsy Cline song they have a job ahead of them.  Tammy took on one of Patsy's very best and she passed the test.  Patsy had such a vocal range that few could really do her songs but Tammy had enough range to a fantastic job with a tough song.  Greatness is just greatness.  It comes out when one grabs the toughest challenges of song that only the great can do.  Tammy was just naturally that way,

this beautiful phrasing is what makes Tammy Tammy and yet another reason why we love her so. be sure to check out the live version of her performing this song on Hee Haw with the Jones Boys backing her.

@truckerbelly You nailed it on the phrasing. I love the way(s) Tammy sings this song... "the who-o-ole ni-ight through". I think I like the Hee Haw version even more-- with those Motown "STOP"s tossed in... lol. There's genius at work here, to be sure.
