Dance With My Father Again
Tamyra Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around till I fell, fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure, I was loved.
If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never ever end
How I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again.

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He'd make me laugh just to comfort me (ooh)
And finally make me do just what my mother said
Later that night when I fell asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me.(noo)

If I could steal one final glance,
One final step, one final dance with him

I'd play a song that would never ever end
'Cause I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again.

Overall Meaning

Tamyra Gray's song "Dance With My Father Again" is a touching tribute to her father, who has passed away. The song is about her longing to be able to dance with her father again and relive the happy memories of her childhood. The lyrics evoke a sense of nostalgia and a desire to go back to a time when life was simpler.

The opening lyrics reflect on the innocence of childhood, before the hardships and difficulties of life set in. Tamyra remembers her father lifting her high and dancing with her and her mother. She recalls how her father would spin her around until she fell asleep, and then carry her up the stairs to bed. These memories bring her comfort and security, and make her feel loved.

Later in the song, Tamyra talks about how she used to run to her father when she disagreed with her mother. He would make her laugh and comfort her, but ultimately he would side with her mother. Even in these moments of conflict, Tamyra remembers the love and support her father showed her. The song ends with Tamyra expressing her wish to dance with her father one last time. She imagines playing a song that would never end, so that she could hold onto that moment forever.

Overall, "Dance With My Father Again" is a powerful tribute to the role that fathers play in their children's lives. It speaks to the universal experience of missing someone who has passed away, and the desire to relive happy memories.

I love this song it's beautiful I picked it to sing at my recital and my boyfriend's father's funeral I cried my eyes out both occasions and made everyone else cry. When I hear the song it reminds me of him and also my dad he's still here but I fear losing him because he is very sick and won't go to the doctor even though I try to get him to go and so does my mom. I love my parents so very much and I feel bad for all the times we argued in the past I never ment to hurt them I wish I can take it all back
