Born in Lelystad, the Brinks family moved to Assen when the twins were nine years of age. They started writing their own songs at a very tender age, inspired by Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Unable to land a record deal, they decided to do things themselves. A number of self-released albums followed and they booked their own shows.
In 2011 Tangarine supported Tim Knol and it was Knol's keyboardist, Matthijs van Duijvenbode, who brought Tangarine to the attention of the Excelsior Recordings record label. The brothers were invited to perform on massively popular Dutch TV show, De Wereld Draait Door and released their Excelsior début record, Seek & Sigh in April 2013. Upon the album's release, De Wereld Draait Door booked them for a season's residency on the show.
As of July 2023 Tangarine has released five full-length studio albums. Their 2013 début was followed by Move On (2014), There and Back (2016, recorded in Tucson, AZ, United States, with members of Calexico), Because of You (2018) and Blank Cassette (2023).
Out of Sight
Tangarine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There were four walls around me
I've been waiting way to long
But there was no one to hold me
But the open road has shown me that this lonely way was meant to be unknown
But days are left at the road behind
Complaints have passed from time to time
They've all gone by and out of sight
I've been hiding from the world
There was something about me
They've been looking at my fears
But there was nowhere to go to
And no one seemed to understand this empty path was only meant for me
But days are left at the road behind
They've all gone by and out of sight
Complaints have passed from time to time
They've all gone by and out of sight
In "Out of Sight," Tangarine sings about their experiences of being isolated and lonely. The lyrics express a sense of inward reflection and waiting for something to happen, yet feeling like they are stuck in one place. The first verse highlights a feeling of confinement, as they describe living with themselves within the limiting four walls, wishing for someone to hold them. However, in the second half of the first verse, the singer conceives of the hope that the open road may release them from their self-imposed isolation. The second verse further illuminates feelings of being misunderstood and avoiding interaction with the world. The lyrics convey that others have been looking at the singer's fears, but there has been nowhere to go to, suggesting that they have been keeping their thoughts and emotions bottled up. However, the singer notes that this lonely path was only meant for them.
The chorus, "But days are left at the road behind, they've all gone by and out of sight, complaints have passed from time to time, they've all gone by and out of sight," suggests that the singer has left the past behind and moved on, resolving not to dwell on the negative experiences that have gone out of sight. The lyrics reveal a sense of finding inner strength and moving forward.
