This Land Is Your Land
Tanglewood Festival Chorus Boston Pops Orchestra/John Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This land is your land, this land is my land
From [the] California to the [Staten] New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters,
[God blessed America for me.]
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
And saw above me that endless skyway,
And saw below me the golden valley, I said:
[God blessed America for me.]

I roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,
And all around me , a voice was sounding:
[God blessed America for me.]

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing
[God blessed America for me.]

When the sun come shining, then I was strolling
In wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling;
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting:
[God blessed America for me.]

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people

As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if
[God blessed America for me.]

Overall Meaning

The song "This Land Is Your Land" is an American folk song that was written and composed by Woody Guthrie in 1940. The song was initially written in response to “God Bless America,” a song composed by Irving Berlin, which Guthrie felt was unrealistic and posed false portrayals of the United States. The chorus lyrics, “This land was made for you and me,” points to the message of inclusivity despite social or economic status.

The first verse sets the scene of Americans from all states – from California to New York, all enjoying and possessing the country together. The second verse tells the story of the singer walking a highway and admiring the beautiful scenery of the Golden Valley with endless skyway, which he felt was a blessing of God. The third verse speaks of the American dream of traveling throughout the country, from the diamond deserts to the wheat fields, and deserting the wall messages that read "Private Property.” The fourth verse tells a story of a peaceful walking experience with the rays of the sun shining and fog lifting. The last verse, however, has a different tone. The singer sees the people struggling with poverty and hunger in relief offices and wonders if America was a blessed land for them too.
