And Then We Heard the Thunder
Tank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tornado's a coming mother nature's main event storm chasers running
To the scene of the accident a car lies broken at the side of the road
Someone trapped inside but who will know a gas line's broke, it's on fire
It will explode debris falls from the sky the sheer force, the sheer power
It mystifies we all have a time to die but it's time to say goodbye...
And then we heard the thunder so loud it shook the ground
And then we heard the thunder such an awesome sound
The wreck is still burning Detroit metal, twisted and bent
There's no point returning as those inside are heaven sent
We just stand and watch and cry with remorse, we cower
Under dangerous skies we all have a time to die but it's time to say goodbye...

And then we heard the thunder so loud it shook the ground
And then we heard the thunder such an awesome sound

Overall Meaning

Tank's song And Then We Heard the Thunder tells the story of a severe and deadly storm. The storms referred to in the first verse primarily refer to tornadoes, which are characterized by their devastating power and short but intense duration. The lines "someone trapped inside but who will know" speak to the unpredictable and chaotic nature of these storms, with a sense of helplessness and uncertainty in a time of crisis. The following lines describe the force of tornadoes: "debris falls from the sky the sheer force, the sheer power, it mystifies." Tornadoes continue to mystify scientists and storm chasers, who dedicate their lives to studying and understanding these destructive phenomena.

The chorus, "And then we heard the thunder so loud it shook the ground, And then we heard the thunder such an awesome sound" reinforces the sense of awe and danger associated with severe weather. Thunder is often heard during storms, but the emphasis on the thunder's intensity drives home the power of the storm that the singer is witnessing. This section of the song serves to highlight the sense of awe and respect that humans are forced to acknowledge in the face of nature's immense force.

The final verse addresses the aftermath of the storm, describing a burning car and the loss of life: "The wreck is still burning Detroit metal, twisted and bent. There's no point returning as those inside are heaven sent." The mournful tone of the section, including the line "we just stand and watch and cry with remorse, we cower," speaks to the tragic and haunting impact of natural disasters. At the end of the song, the message is clear: while humanity tries to control and understand the world around them, there are forces both beautiful and devastating that remain beyond our ability to fully comprehend.

Oh man, could this be any more 80's?  Those incredibly chunky riffs, the steady bass and drums...Tank is a severely underrated band and they truly deserve their place among their NWOBHM peers as well as the newer times. Algy ward will always be my man, and in my heart Tank will always be him and the two Brabbs brothers. That said, all I have to say is this is one awesome song.
