We did the 'beer test' with our (belgian) Leopard tanks when I did my tour of duty in '93, during winter, so the beer would stay cold. Impressing as it was we were all thinking in the lines of 'who gets to drink the beer when this is over?' During duty hours?' A challenge we wouldn't walk away from.... 😊

The leopard has always had the best gun stabilization system, but its impressive that they've made a system for the t60, no more fixed gun flopping around as the tank makes a corner

The Soviets had a near monopoly on stabilizers since the 1950s with the T-55, it’s not impressive to have one now let alone back in the 1970s when the US finally caught up with the upgraded M60s. The stabilizer in the Ukrainian T-64s is the 2E28M which is newer than the one that originally came on early T-64 models, but it’s still from the 1970s. It was a good system for the time and is still good enough to be used today, but it’s not impressive nor did the Ukrainians make them themselves.

By comparing the videos I would say the Leopard 2 in the clip from 1982 was moving faster on rougher terrain than what was shown with the T62.
It's not enough to have the electronics one also needs fast and strong actuators which can implement the needed movements.

@Zymbaluknik T-64BV is still soviet when it comes to engine (unless running 6TD series engine), transmission, main gun (which was more than likely not replaced with KBM-1 gun due to its low quality. Also it is still nothing more than a copy of the 2A46), autoloader, driving controls. T-64BM Bulat has shown itself to be WAY overweight and was not used in the war much, instead T-64BV were the workhorses, in standard soviet guise. How is the T-64E going?

In order to keep the glass on the tip end of the turret the Ukrainians had to glue it down, even then it took them 4 attempts as they had difficulties in finding a glue that dried clear and transparent yet was strong enough to hold the cup for the 30 seconds they filmed the tank moving. The final video was sped up 25% in order to match the speed of the German tank from 2 decades ago…😉

I would say their tanks seem to qualify as being on-par with Russia's best upgraded soviet-era tanks. Not quite on par with the newest NATO tanks, let alone some of what the US has. But that's not who they need to fight, and this shows that not only are Ukrainian tanks a match for the Russian equivalent, but each tank Russia leaves behind will likely be added to Ukraine's own arsenal almost as easily as if it were always a Ukranian tank. The fact that Ukraine and Russia are both working forward from the same old design is very beneficial to Ukraine. It's possible that by the time this war is over, both Russia and Ukraine could have the same number of tanks - that would be pretty embarrassing for Russia.

I got to sit in a leopard 2 and control the turret once. Was amazed how fast and smooth it was, felt like i could kill anything with it.

This is the standard way that European militaries test their stabilization of their tanks if you were wondering with all the videos of these out there.

Back in the 1960s, my Dad used to drive his MkIV Jaguar saloon with a threepenny bit balanced on the dashboard. Sometimes he could do a few minutes of driving without it falling. A threepeny bit would buy quite a lot in those days, but more lately we've had to suffer Capitalist economics out of control, so all the money's hived off into offshore accounts whilst the rest of us slowly starve etc.

Funny that no one realizes that the beer on the barrel of the leopard 2a4 was glued on because there is a sticky rubbery surface. But all in all they are both incredible machines

That must be a standard test of the military industry. The inspector will drink the beer at the end of the test, and if he's happy he'll give his approval.

As cool as it is. The leapers never spilled a drop. You can see the liquid in the t64 flying around. Still a good system, but if its put up against an MBT from anywhere but China or Russia, itll mean a huge difference when those moments come where that gun stabilizer is all thats making ylu more accurate than your adversary

We used to time a v-8 engine with a glass of water sitting on top of the air cleaner. When the water was still, the timing was good. I miss the good old days.
