Tanlines was formed in 2008 after Cohen and Emm worked together producing a song for Cohen's band, Professor Murder. Emm had previously worked as a producer for other bands with his brother Joshua Topolsky and had also performed in the bands Don Caballero and Storm & Stress. In 2009, Tanlines opened several times on tour for Julian Casablancas.
After releasing several remixes for bands that included Au Revoir Simone, The Tough Alliance, El Guincho, and Telepathe, the band collaborated with Salem to release a split EP entitled S.A.W. in early 2010.
The band's first EP of their own music, Settings, was released in March 2010 and was praised by Pitchfork as "an enjoyable listen" and "a punchy introduction to what these guys do well." In November 2010, Tanlines released Tanlines, a compilation of all their released music up to that date and several other tracks and remixes.
The band has played with Vampire Weekend, The xx, Rick Ross, Yeasayer, Health, and Delorean.

I saw the sun going down
Let's meet up at the beginning
Let's meet up at the beginning
I know the reason
I'm down at the bottom of it all
Let's meet up at the beginning
Let's meet up at the beginning
Cause I fall to pieces
I'm falling apart
I fall to pieces
When you go
I fall to pieces
When you're away
I fall to pieces
When you're away
When you're away
When you're away
When you're away
I read the papers
I know the
Let's meet up at the beginning
Let's meet up at the beginning
I know the reasons (know it all)
I'm down at the bottom of it all
Let's meet up at the beginning
Let's meet up at the beginning
I saw the ruins
I saw the world turning black
Let's meet up at the beginning
Let's meet up at the beginning
I fall to pieces When you're away
The lyrics of Tanlines's song "Pieces" reflect a sense of desperation and longing for connection. The singer seems to have been exposed to the harsh realities of life, with the imagery of the sun going down, the world turning black, and the papers suggesting some form of negative news. Despite this, they hold onto the hope of meeting up with someone, potentially a loved one, at the beginning - perhaps suggesting that they wish to start anew or return to a simpler time.
The repetition of "Let's meet up at the beginning" adds to the sense of urgency and the desire to start over. The lines "I know the reason" and "I'm down at the bottom of it all" suggest that the singer is aware of their own struggles and may be seeking comfort in someone else. The phrase "When you go" implies that this person may have already left or is about to leave, leading the singer to fall apart.
The final lines of the song, which repeat "When you're away," emphasize once again the singer's longing for this person's presence. The song leaves the listener with a sense of wanting and heartache, wrapped up in a catchy, upbeat tune.
