His Eye Is On The Sparrow
Tanya Blount Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why should I feel discouraged
Why should the shadows come
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches over me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me

I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches
I know He watches
I know He watches me

I sing because Iยดm happy
I sing because Iยดm free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
He watches me
I know

He watches
Me

Overall Meaning

The song His Eye Is On The Sparrow, originally written in 1905 by Charles H. Gabriel and Civilla D. Martin, and performed by Tanya Blount and Lauryn Hill, is a powerful reminder of the faithfulness and love of God. The lyrics convey a message of hope and reassurance that, no matter what difficulties and hardships we face, God is always with us and will never abandon us. The first verse asks a series of rhetorical questions, reflecting the doubts and fears that we all experience at different times in our lives. The answer to each question, of course, is that we need not feel discouraged or fearful, because Jesus is always with us, and we are never alone.

The second part of the song is more upbeat and joyful, with the repeated refrain "I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free". This reflects the joy and peace that come from knowing that God is always watching over us, like a loving parent or guardian. The song ends with a powerful affirmation of faith and trust, with the repeated phrase "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me". This statement is a reminder that God's love and care extend to all of his creations, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.

I am surviving cancer everyday. Everyone around me is busy on the go living their life Iโ€™m mostly at home or church because my immune system is so low from chemo. But Satan is a liar with God I am never alone. Everyday that he spares me is time spent with him. My season of strength is in the hand of God. One day I will ride my bicycle and run outside with my children. They that wait upon the lord shall renew their strength. This song helps me to understand that if God takes time out to provide and care for a bird. I know he will watch over me for the rest of my daysโค๏ธ
