Daddy and Home
Tanya Tucker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am dreaming, tonight, of an old southern town
And the best friend that I ever had
For I've grown so weary of roaming around
And I'm going home to my dad

Your hair has turned to silver and I know you're failing too
Daddy, dear, oh, daddy, I'm coming back to you
You made my childhood happy but still I longed to roam
I've had my way, but now I'll say, I long for you and for home

Dear daddy, you shared all my sorrows and joys
You tried hard to bring me up right
I know you'll still be one of the boys
I'm starting back home tonight

Your hair has turned to silver and I know you're failing too
Daddy, dear, oh, daddy, I'm coming back to you
You made my childhood happy but still I longed to roam
I've had my way, but now I'll say, I long for you and for home

I've had my way, but now I'll say
I long for you and for home

Overall Meaning

In “Daddy and Home”, Tanya Tucker sings about wanting to return to her hometown after spending time away. The lyrics express a longing for the simplicity and comfort of childhood, and a desire to be with her father again. In the first stanza, she dreams of an old southern town and her best friend, reminiscing about how she's grown weary of roaming around and wants to go home to her dad. The second stanza is a direct address to her father, acknowledging how his hair has turned silver and he's aging. She tells him she's coming back to him and that he made her childhood happy, but she always longed to roam. However, now she's ready to return home to him.

The song speaks to the universal desire to return home and find comfort in the familiar. Tanya Tucker's smooth voice recalls a simpler time when things were easier and she was surrounded by love. The lyrics can also be read as a tribute to a father figure who provided stability and support in her life, and a bittersweet acknowledgment of the passage of time.

Tanya Tucker does such a perfect version of this Jimmy Davis classic. My Daddy passed away in his sleep, thanks be to God for His tender mercies, so of course I am sad but this song could've been written about him. It is comforting when you have a song or two that takes you back to the happiest times a daughter and father can share. If there's any one else who has lost a father recently I can recommend this song, Sinead O'Connor's Daddy I'm Fine (there is a bit of strong language in that one! ) & Fleetwood Mac's( w/a Christine MacVie solo) Songbird. I hope they bring you comfort in your time of grief.
Peace, Regan
