Strong Enough to Bend
Tanya Tucker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind
And the reason its still standing
It was strong enough to bend

For years, we have stayed together
As lovers and as friends
What we have will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you say something that you can't take back
Big wind blows and you hear a little crack
When you say "Hey well I might be wrong"
You can sway with the wind till the storm is gone
Sway with the wind till the storm is gone

Like a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind
Our love will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you start thinkin' that you know it all
Big wind blows and a branch will fall
When you say "Hey this job takes two"
We can sway with the wind till the skies turn blue
Sway with the wind till the skies turn blue

Like a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind

Our love will last forever if we're strong enough to bend
Our love will last forever if we're strong enough to bend

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, "There's a tree out in the backyard/That never has been broken by the wind/And the reason its still standing/It was strong enough to bend" serve as a metaphor for the strength of a relationship. The tree represents a couple's bond, and the fact that it has not been broken by the winds of change and turmoil indicates that the two partners have the ability to sway and adjust to one another's needs without sacrificing their own strength and individuality.

The lyrics go on to suggest that staying strong in a committed relationship requires a certain amount of flexibility and willingness to admit fault or error. When one partner says or does something hurtful or damaging, the relationship can experience a "big wind" that may threaten to break it apart. However, if the couple is "strong enough to bend," they can weather the storm and emerge even stronger on the other side.

The last verse speaks to the idea that even when things are going well, there is still a need for compromise and mutual support in order to maintain the strength of the relationship. By working together as a team and acknowledging each other's contributions, the couple can "sway with the wind till the skies turn blue" and create a lasting, fulfilling partnership.

I saw her in concert July 4 1986 in Korea. One of the best concerts I saw. She stayed and signed autographs, talked to her fans, etc. Then went to the ville and walked into the Silver Star country bar. Told her MP guard to stay outside and partied with us and took pictures. Said she wanted to party with real country folks (which at this time we were all country boys and girls). She even bought several rounds for everyone. One Hell of a supporter of the troops
