Escape
TaraElla Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's lunch time at school
Those two stupid things are at it again
They think they're the best
Putting everyone down, you know you are next
What did you do?

Escape
What else is there to do
Escape
Don't let them bring you down
Find that place, so dear to your heart
Find that place, where your dreams come true

Escape
What else is there to do
Escape
Let your mind wander
To that place, we have all got one
To that place, it's where you belong

Escape

It's lunch time today
Those two stupid things are at it again
Think they're king and queen
Say you are worthless, you just can't take it
What do you do?

Escape
What else is there to do
Escape
Don't let them bring you down
Find that place, so dear to your heart
Find that place, where your dreams come true

Escape
What else is there to do
Escape
Let your mind wander
To that place, we have all got one
To that place, it's where you belong

Escape

No matter where you are
Those psychopaths are, out to get you
To keep yourself sane
You need to go there, get away from them
It's what you do

Escape
What else is there to do
Escape
Don't let them bring you down
Find that place, so dear to your heart
Find that place, where your dreams come true

Escape
What else is there to do
Escape
Let your mind wander
To that place, we have all got one
To that place, it's where you belong

Escape

Overall Meaning

In the song "Escape" by TaraElla, the lyrics describe a recurring scenario that many people can relate to. The singer starts by narrating that it is lunchtime at school, and two mean individuals are bullying and explicitly harming others. The target feels that next, they will be the subject of the bullies' aggression. The chorus encourages the listener to escape or find a way to cope with the tough situation. The artist repeats, "Escape, what else is there to do? Let your mind wander to that place we've all got one. It's where you belong." These lyrics depict the singer's urge to leave the current situation and find peace elsewhere.

The second verse is similar to the first, with the bullies continuing to taunt and put others down, specifically calling the target worthless. The singer acknowledges that sometimes we need to escape from things or people to maintain our sanity. The chorus repeats that escape or finding a safe place is the ideal solution to this problem. The lyrics send a message of hope and encouragement to those experiencing similar instances, reminding them that they can find a safe place where they belong.

Critical theory can be traced back even further than the Frankfurt school. A key figure in the early 20th century was Hungarian philosopher Gyorgy Lukacs who focused his attention way more on stuff like aesthetics which was untypical within marxism at the time since Marx saw this stuff as mere ideology as opposed to material economics.
Then of course there was Italian philosopher Antonio Gramsci who in the 1920s created the whole theoretical framework on cultural hegemony which was a major driving force in the student protests of the 1960s.

I know Gramsci and Lukacs also strongly influenced critical theory. But the Frankfurt School invented the term.
