The thing is without considering the genetics, no one is born with self hatred, negative self talk or mental illnesses. If someone keeps destroying how you perceive yourself verbally all the time, in time, it's easy to believe these words instead of what you knew was true. So it's all in her head but others were in the first place.

Mental illnesses do have a genetic base... Im adopted and had a great childhood... But Im still bipolar and im pretty sure my bio mom was bipolar and im pretty sure my daughter's bipolar... There are mental illnesses you can gain through trauma... But some of the really difficult one's that are life long you're definitely born with... There's no triggering event... They just seek up one you... But they do drop hints if you can spot them.. But having creeps spout a bunch of b.s. at you does not help either... Especially if you're already vulnerable...

@daniela9488 Agreed. If you've ever read or watched Sapolsky, he talks about (so many things) but the seconds, minutes, hours, days, and years before a decision is made and all that happens in the brain before that point. We come to find out very little is actually decided by "us" in that moment.

Hi Dr marks. My father knick named my older brother King as he was the eldest and due to my sensitive nature I was called my mother's " glass shoe ". I was too young to realise that these were mind games and I come to envy my brothers title because kings ruled. It didn't do my self esteem any good when I was informed of the Cinderella story but I unconsciously came to believe that that was what a woman wanted. To be rescued from depravity and abuse. I can now see that my mom's mom instilled that fable into her and that my father knew my mother's unconscious desire to be a socialite of some description. You see my mom's mom had nursed my father through a near fatal virus when he was a young man. My mother was a child and she then lost her mother to leukaemia when she was 14. She was then bullied out of her grief. My father then came back into her life when she was 18 and she became so infatuated with him that she actually had a phantom pregnancy and as a result they were married.that was the done thing if you got a woman pregnant. She phantom pregnancy dispelled itself and she ended up falling pregnant legitimately and my older brother was born. He became my father's Golden child as I mentioned and he played me as the weakest link that being the representation of the over-sensitive one which is something my mother tried to mask and could never acknowledge. They struggled for years for power and control. Who was the dominant personality. And I introjected all that distortion. I'm approaching 50 now and still sifting my way through it. I still find myself acting out that distortion. My ego still falls victim to the fables that it engineers. Maybe you could do a video on introjections and positive and the negative effects of it. I think if there was some sort of trauma its likely to repeat or replay the situation ( usually PTSD). When my best friend died at a very young age his Mother was never ever the same. Some things I dont think people get over. Maybe your asking about people that constantly dwell in the past. That would be an interesting talk. I would love something on re-training the brain to truly let go ( then sometimes I think we could almost get into a religious/God discussion.....sorry for the ramble!!

The key to healing from personality disorder is to be aware of the self unconscious thought that we all have. Meditation was a amazing tool to become self aware of these negative thoughts that make us trigger and go through another circle of paranoia episode.

Often the mind and thoughts can be so convincing that it's an issue unique to myself and brings about even more shame and self condemnation because you feel like you're the cause of all life's problems. These videos and the cognitive behavioural therapy Dr Marks mentioned do help in recognising that it isn't normal and that these thoughts aren't always true. And I've learnt that often I catastrophize a situation. There's much work to do, but you're not alone. And neither am I. I realize that I cannot help heal this person's own issues. I've debated pointing them out, but it seems like it may just upset them more. I'm starting to think that maybe just privately letting them know about the resources available to them may help them the most.

People with mental illness can often psychologically project when they feel stuck or are suffering in their mental health and having a crisis. I've seen this happen a lot. I had took my own advice in the comments after ruminating about issues for years. I have decided to finally get real help for my neurological disorder.

@Sharon You are right, anyone can really. I'm just saying from the perspective of someone who is mentally ill when it becomes unmanagible you can often project or blame others for stuff uk. It can be hard to be totally accountable for your actions anr faults when you deal with any sort of thing really not just from a mental illness. Its human nature when stressed to outright dismiss something if it pertains negatively to you or you make the negative association uk. Everyone can find themselvez projecting but few will actually call out their own bs to try and learn not to default to that uk.

Yes please I would like to hear more. In my case specifically as a child who’s mother didn’t know where I ended and she began. As an example, she would often tell me I looked like a “streetwalker” when I left the house if it wasn’t in clothes she would approve of. Oh man, I remember walking 3 whole blocks from home to the school play at like 8pm, and the teachers in charge asking where my Mom was; me telling them she was working... and then hearing them "whisper" to each other about how she's probably too drunk to show up...

Although we typically talk about projection as a negative defense mechanism, technically projection is something we do all the time; it’s the foundation of human life because we cannot emotionally respond to anything outside of ourselves if there is no resonance for it inside ourselves.

So projection can be positive or negative. We often disown our inner beauty and see it in others; such as when we fall in love. When we fall out of love it’s because we have “taken back” that projection.

Overall, life is a continuous process of projection and taking back our projections. That’s why the ultimate goal of any genuine spiritual path is to be consciously and consistently aware of this. This is what allows for inner peace because one no longer feels victimized; we recognize our part in the drama of life.

I think projection, if not abused, could actually be good with the right people. For instance, I tend to project to my partner and friends, who I have made very aware of my insecurities. Then, the big denials that they give me, I unconsiously receive them as a bit of reassurance that my insecurities are unfounded, booze to my selfsteem, and overall make me feel a bit better. I guess you could also call this attention seeking, but regardless, it works well with the right mindset.

I lost my parents when I was about 5 and I usually stay home alone. I'm interested in wanting to know how to deal with someone who is projecting onto me, especially when dealing with a narcissist (or at least someone with a narcissistic trait) who is trying to protect themselves by preempting the possible accusation (which I consciously try to avoid making unnecessary accusations) by projecting what they know they're doing onto me, accusing me of what they are doing. I deal with this a lot in intellectual conversations online; as a person's argument falls apart, they begin lashing out to avoid admitting the failure of their argument. This has also occurred in person from time to time. (People are usually more self-controlled in person.)

My response is typically to ignore their accusations until it reaches a tipping point, such as if they reiterate them by listing their accusations against me that are all projections of their own behavior while I am trying to stick to the subject.

It’s different when it’s a virtual/online debate rather than an interaction with someone who knows you well. I think in the case of the debate it is best just to ignore or deflect because you really aren’t going to convince them that what they are saying is incorrect. When it happens with an acquaintance, you have to set limits that you’re not going to own what the person is saying. They have to see that what they’re saying doesn’t have much impact.

I'm a little confused, because I thought to project means assuming/interpreting someone else's words, actions, mental state etc. within one's own frame of reference. I never thought that has to be connected to negative internalized stuff.
Example: "What do you mean, you don't want a bday party? Everybody loves bday parties. You're gonna get one anyways, and I promise you're gonna love it!!"
I'd argue this is a kind of projection without negative internalized stuff.

As a person with autism, I often feel that people without autism project their abilities and enjoyments on me, not out of any negative internalization, but sometimes out of an intent to do me smth good (party, spontaneous visit) and almost always out of forgetting that I have limits that they don't have (spontaneous changes of plans, unpunctuality, well-meant advice "why don't you 'just' do <xyz>" where <xyz> will likely send me into a meltdown etc.).
In turn, I project too, for example, when I see someone being sad, my instinct is to comfort them by leaving them alone - because loneliness, peace and quiet comforts me, when I'm upset. And I did act like that for a long time until I got social competence training that taught me that most people like a hug when they're sad.

I always called these situations projection. Is there a different word for this?

re 3:20. This is a gem. Wish more people understood it. Unfortunately people have to be ‘psychologically minded’, in order to grasp this concept. Creating and using ‘positive self-talk’ is vital, as our brain is like a computer which we are constantly re-programming.

What sucks is when you accept yourself but the rest of society doesn't... It's a fine balancing act to remain a confidant, happy, self loving fat person... When the fact you don't hate yourself makes others hate you even more...

It depends but don't let a few in society make you feel down. Theres billions of humans uk. Not just the few who would automatically dismiss you with some sort of invalid criticizism. You just keep doing you in life because this is the only life you have to live and try not to get hung up on people who can't make sense of you even if you explain yourself the best way you can. You often shouldn't have to explain yourself in such a way to strangers on social medias.

@Mad G I don't get too worked up over it anymore... But It does really piss me off and others opinions of me does have real world consequences... And I can't even have a canded conversation about it because if you even dare try to bring it up or defend yourself every weight hating troll on the net jumps in... Fatphobia is bigotry and discrimination in full force... But you can't even talk about it because no one wants to listen... You should see the comment sections on any of the ted talks about weight stigma and it's consequences... Just then most vile, hateful, dismissive things you've ever heard... Honestly at least you might be able to shame a racist... But fat people are fair game when ever how ever and forever...

@light Worker If you are healthy or feel healthy and think you are fat or are overweight then there is nothing wrong with you. Listen I have one Spanish parent and one American parent and my dad was a twig until he met my mother. He was the type of guy who was fatphobic as a lot of hispanic people are in South America and other Spanish speaking countries are. Even I can obsess about my own weight but because of health reasons when I make any transition from overweight to obese. Think finding your own comfort level with your body image and being happy with yourself and being able to go in the mirror, "I look hot," really helps u know. I do get mad when it hurts people or becomes a real disorder for people with food and depression. People deserve to know that they can control how they feel within a body like that. When I had found out I had fatty liver and gullbladder and a myriad of other conditions that made me question my life I had to change the way I did things because I was suffering. I am really jealous of people who can be overweight or even obese but with little to nothing wrong occuring with their health. Meanwhile if I gain 40 more pounds I know that my own condition will worsen and I will feel worse outside and inside because of the issues. Some people can't be lucky enough to have beautiful soft plump skin either. Fat men can have a lot of issues u know especially if we are hairy men.

@Mad G My hubby is a Fat hairy man... And he's the best... My physical health took a shit from being homeless for too long and My idiot doctors messing major red flag symptoms because I was diagnosed as fat... If they had caught the RA and narrowing of my spine when it first started to flare up I'd still be able to walk... I used to be super active walking miles everyday... Moving furniture, welding.. What sucks is when I finally got off the streets and was about to get my life back together... And literally overnight my physical health went to shit over night... But I still enjoy myself and keep busy... It's just unfortunate that I have to depend on others for anything requiring more than minimal movement... But o well it is what it is... Ive been through worse...

@light Worker As long as you are getting the help you need right now for yourself and love your husband and yourself everything is going to be alright.

I often feel neglected about my own issues and feel that Doctors can be overly ready to jump the band wagon on decisions without properly screening you for the proper medicines and treatments and even hurdling a misdiagnoses at you because they are grounded in their own belief in how you might be you know. Not saying Doctors are wrong or ruin peoples lives. I am saying that the process to get real help for real issues is often a convoluted one that takes many trips to many doctors...it's sad when some Doctors/other healthcare professions don't really care about their patients though. You take a hippocratic oath and the minute you screw up or aren't on top of your patients you exclude yourself of any real accountability and you want to blame your patients out right for their own behavior even if that patient was trying their best...sickening. I don't think certain people should be allowed to be apart of a practice if they don't love their career/practice and actively want to see change happening for their patients especially in Psychiatry.

Very interesting and useful video. It is really hard to see oneself even if one wants to.
It raises the question: How can someone know if they are projecting or if they are being objective? Averaging opinions with others?
