Safe and Sound
Tay Swift ft The Civil Wars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said, I'll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, don't leave me here alone
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight

Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound

Don't you dare look out your window darling
Everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby
Even when the music's gone
Gone

Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound

Ooh, (ooh), ooh, (ooh)
La la (la la)
La la (la la)
Ooh, (ooh), ooh, (ooh)
La la (la la)

Just close your eyes
You'll be alright
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift ft. The Civil Wars depict a scene of uncertainty and fear amid chaos, war, and conflict. The verses take us back in time when a promise was made of never letting someone go during a dark period when shadows were almost overpowering the light. The memory of the individual begging not to be left alone comes back to mind as it resonates with the current state of the world. Despite the past being gone, uncertainty and insecurity continue to reign in the present. However, the chorus offers a ray of hope as the singer reassures the listener to close their eyes as the sun goes down since they will be safe and sound, without anyone hurting them.

The second verse intensifies the chaos, urging the individual not to look outside since everything is on fire due to the raging war beyond the door. Amid the music which has gone silent, the lullaby becomes a source of comfort, something to hold onto in the midst of anarchy, and even when everything else has gone. The chorus is then repeated to emphasize the power of reassurance and hope to counteract the prevailing negativity.

Overall, the song emphasizes the grit, resilience, and hope that people hold onto during trying times. It asserts that even when everything is falling apart, hope exists in the form of promises made, music, memories, and trusting that regardless of the present darkness, morning light will come bringing safety and restoration.

Taylor represents Prim as a ghost and she visits District 12, and everything's dead. She's basically singing to Katniss, and the lyrics;

Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire,
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone...

This verse talks about the war, the fire that burned the district down, and when Katniss and her father are gone because they were the music in that household. Also, there is a direct reference to the Hunger Games when she picks up the Mockingjay pin.

THIS MAY BE THE MOST HEARTFELT THING I HAVE EVER POSTED.
