Sacrifice yourself like a bandolier
Keep pushing yourself right on through the fear
Better kick it to a higher gear
Complexity in relativity, until it all piles up
Feeling all the numbing, can't feel other than the cuts
The mind shuts down
Waking up becomes a chore
Binding yourself up in metal chains
Walking through, burdened by the shame
Life feels like some sickening game
Slowly and surely you're going insane
Complexity in relativity, until it all piles up
Feeling all the numbing, can't feel other than the cuts
The mind shuts down
The world spins around
Waking up becomes a chore
Your work takes blood and sweat and your tears
Sacrifice yourself like a bandolier
Keep pushing yourself right on through the fear
Better kick it to a higher gear
Complexity in relativity, until it all piles up
Feeling all the numbing, can't feel other than the cuts
The mind shuts down
The world spins around
Opportunities become slamming doors
I said
Complexity in relativity, until it all piles up
Feeling all the numbing, can't feel other than the cuts
The mind shuts down
The world spins around
Waking up becomes a chore
In "Relativity," Taylor sings about the burdens and sacrifices that come with hard work, alluding to the saying that tough times build character. The lyrics suggest that the pressure to succeed can take a toll on a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing. Taylor describes this burden through imagining that the person feels like they are binding themselves up in metal chains, walking through life burdened by shame and feeling like life is a "sickening game." The chorus reinforces the notion of complexity in relativity, suggesting that it is difficult to truly understand the full impact of one's struggles until they pile up, leading to emotional and mental numbness. It becomes increasingly hard to feel anything beyond the cuts and bruises that are sustained in pursuit of success. The world seems to spin around and the effort required to wake up each day becomes a chore.
The song conveys the message that in order to overcome these struggles, one must keep pushing and keep moving, kicking things I to a higher gear. By self sacrificing and pushing through the fears, the burdens of life can be overcome, and opportunities can arise, though they may seem like slamming doors when reliant on the simplicity of relativity. Overall, Taylor emphasizes the idea that life is full of complexities that cannot be fully understood, but pushing through the pain and continuing to work hard will ultimately lead to success.
