According to the Taylor Dayne Songfacts Interview, Taylor grew up in Long Island, and her parents were very involved in independent theatre: the Manhattan Theatre Group, the Pap Theatre, La Mome. By 4 or 5 she was singing along with the radio. Her dad gave Taylor her first radio, she turned it on and there was Stevie Wonder playing. As Taylor grew older, she started going into a little bit more of a rock direction as the top 40 was going in a different path for a period of time - it was more of the supergroups, Jethro Tull, Yes etc. She had her first solo by first grade, and by her fourth grade she was singing Jacques Brel.
Dayne came to prominence in the late 1980s and remained at the top of the charts through the 1990s. She released her fifth album "Satisfied" in February 2008. "Beautiful" the first single hit number 1 in the American dance charts and #23 on the Adult Contemporary. The second single from "Satisfied" titled "My Heart Can't Change" reached #19 on the Adult Contemporary chart. In 2010, Dayne's single "Facing A Miracle" was released. In 2011, Dayne's single "Floor On Fire" became her 18th Top 10 hit when it peaked at #8 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Dayne continues to record and tour.

You Meant The World To Me
Taylor Dayne Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was torn between love and pride
You kissed the child in me
Went and brought about a lady
Lovin' times always seen to change
I guess I'm a part to blame
We lost our eye to eye
Well your pushing got the best of me
A time I'd thought I'd never leave
Lift the hands that had a hold on me
Now it's time to breathe
'Cause you meant the world to me
But I had other needs
To be the girl of someone's eye
And not a type that you could love and hide
'Cause you had to take control
So I just had to go
I'm sorry how it had to be
But you meant the world to me
The love you gave blinded me
So disguised I couldn't see
You eyes seemed so sincere
I didn't notice any trouble there
But you went and turned your love on me
Only wanted me lock and key
Didn't understand my thoughts and ways
Pretty soon you said I'd changed
You meant the world to me
You meant the world
People tell you stand by your man
If it's love through thick and thin
But you wouldn't go and let it be
So now it's time for me, yeah
The lyrics to Taylor Dayne's "You Meant The World To Me" depict a woman who is torn between love and pride. She didn't want to say goodbye, but her partner's need for control and inability to understand her thoughts and ways slowly made her realize she had to leave. The love she once felt for him blinded her to his possessiveness and his desire to keep her locked up. As a result, she found herself suffocated and unable to be the type of girl she wanted to be.
The line "You kissed the child in me, went and brought about a lady" hints at how the relationship changed her. She started off as a naive girl, but because of her love for him, she became a woman who is capable of standing on her own. The chorus, "But I had other needs, to be the girl of someone's eye, and not a type that you could love and hide" highlights how her partner's love was possessive, and she wants to be with someone who can love her freely without wanting to control her.
The lyrics end with her saying that it's time for her to leave, as she couldn't let her partner have control over her life anymore. It's a powerful song that highlights the importance of self-respect and the need to be with someone who will love you for who you are.
