Speak Now
Taylor Swift⥮ Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am not the kind of girl,
Who should be rudely bargin' in on a white veil occasion,
But you are not the kind of boy,
Who should be marryin' the wrong girl

I sneak in and see your friends,
And her snotty little family, all dressed in pastel,
And she is yelling at a bridesmaid,
Somewhere back inside a room,
Wearing a gown shaped like a pastry,
This is surely not what you thought it would be,
I lose myself in a daydream,
Where I stand and say

"Don't say yes, run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out,
Of the church at the back door,
Don't wait or say a single vow,
You need to hear me out,"
And they said, "Speak now"

Fond gestures are exchanged,
And the organ starts to play
A song that sounds like a death march,
And I am hiding in the curtains,
It seems I was uninvited by your lovely bride-to-be,
She floats down the aisle like a pageant queen,
But I know you wish it was me,
You wish it was me, don't you?

Don't say yes, run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out,
Of the church at the back door,
Don't wait or say a single vow,
You need to hear me out,
And they said, "Speak now"

Don't say yes, run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out,
Of the church at the back door,
Don't wait or say a single vow,
Your time is running out,
And they said, "Speak now"

I hear the preacher say,
"Speak now or forever hold your peace,"
There's a silence, there's my last chance,
I stand up with shaking hands,
All eyes on me,
Horrified looks from everyone in the room,
But I'm only lookin' at you

I am not the kind of girl,
Who should be rudely bargin' in on a white veil occasion,
But you are not the kind of boy,
Who should be marryin' the wrong girl

Don't say yes, run away now,
I'll meet you when you're out,
Of the church at the back door,
Don't wait or say a single vow,
You need to hear me out,
And they said, "Speak now"

And you say, "Let's run away now,
I'll meet you when I'm out of my tux at the back door,

Oh baby, I didn't say my vow,
So glad you were around when they said, "Speak now"

Overall Meaning

In "Speak Now," Taylor Swift tells the story of a woman who can't keep her true feelings for her old flame hidden any longer. Swift sings about a wedding ceremony where her ex-boyfriend is marrying the wrong girl. Though she confesses that it's not her place to interrupt such a special occasion, she can't seem to help herself. Swift describes how she sneaks into the wedding unnoticed only to see the wrong girl and her family dressed in pastel colors, and the bride-to-be is even yelling at one of her bridesmaids. Swift refers to the wrong girl's dress as "a gown shaped like a pastry."

As she loses herself in a daydream, Swift wishes she could tell him to run away at the back door of the church and hear her out. She implores him not to make any vows since he's not marrying the right girl. The chorus repetitively emphasizes the importance of speaking up: "Don't say yes, run away now, I'll meet you when you're out Of the church at the back door, Don't wait or say a single vow, You need to hear me out, And they said, 'Speak now.'"

The song continues with Taylor Swift braving up and standing up to speak up during the "speak now or forever hold your peace" part of the wedding ceremony. The groom sits with a horrified look, while everyone watches Taylor Swift with surprise. The song concludes with the two running away in joy to be together. Swift upholds the message that it is always better to speak up than to keep silent, no matter what.
