I came here after reading a male reviewing this speech as "Out of place and not needed in a night like that. It was about celebrating women and she ruined it" And I just can't believe the cheek of that person.
Taylor is receiving an award as Woman Of the Decade and she's just telling the truth about how she's been treated as a woman in that industry during the last 10 years. Nothing more and nothing less.
It's just easier to say that she was out of place than to accept to change a male-dominant system. As women, I am sure every single one of us can relate.
Maybe it was in school, maybe at work, but at some point, we all felt powerless and used because the system doesn't see us as equal as men.
Accepting this award without saying a thing would have meant just being part of the system. Take this award, so you can shut up about not having the same opportunities or the same power as a man. Say thank you, smile, and let us judge you by how skinny you were that night, and what you were wearing in peace, bitch.
I was too young to see it before, but Taylor is been treated like garbage by the music industry just because she's talented as hell and beautiful. People can't stand a woman having so much power, talent, and beauty all at the same time. It makes a lot of people feeling inadequate, especially men.
And I am saying all of this without being a fan of her music, I am saying this as a woman that has been through the same crap as hers, just in a way smaller way because I am not famous. My female friends went through the same stuff, and our only guilt is being ambitious women.
Sorry for how long this is, but I am done with this crap. We need equality.

Taylor is accomplished but, awwards mean very little.

and to top it off they lost to Taylor Swift on a VOCAL album. If it were like say . . . just POP album where voice didn't come into play? I'd not complain but Taylor doesn't have any vocal strengths technically speaking?
Taylor's strength is her tone and guitar skills. Her falsetto is glorified sighing. Florence has the strongest female falsetto in the business currently and is an amazingly strong belter, where as belting is at the bottom of Taylor's skill list. Florence also has the best breath control in the business right now and can sustain and weave lengthy notes that crescendo or descend massively in seconds for LONG periods of time.
There literally isn't a single vocal area where Taylor is superior. It's not even a dig, it's like comparing Selena Gomez to Sia. Selena has songs I LOVE. They're easy to listen to and super flirty, chill but obviously even if you don't like Sia it's obvious the better singer is Sia.

I have always appreciated her music but I have never truly realized her strength, eloquence, grace, and intelligence before this past year. Taylor Swift is a true inspiration to all who will give her the time of day.
This speech was beyond necessarily in formulating the message that women have always been and continue to be refused the chance that men have in the music industry. Music is art. And people only criticize art because they cannot understand it. They won’t. This is such a beautiful display of women uplifting women regardless of the way our patriarchal society measures women against each other on the basis of beauty, talent, status, and wealth.
For too long women have been told that their worth can be and is only measured by their beauty and politeness which is code for “humbly accepting and allowing the continuation of the stereotype that men deserve success and women must prove themselves worthy of it.”
Throughout her years as a public figure, she has experienced criticism, shame, unprovoked slander, and outright bullying, and has become the thing impotent men have feared the most. An icon. She has powered through the abuse and has risen from the ashes of pure hate as a phoenix. She is the woman of the decade. And yet, she still manages to recognize the achievements of her “competitors.”
Taylor has always been an inspiration since the age of 16 and has never lost her humility, intelligence, grace, or eloquence. Us women are more than our status and beauty. She has proven that time and time again. Hopefully now people will listen.
