Can I Go With You
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Any day now
They're talking war
I can see the light
That's in your eyes
They're not talkin
A week or two
Oh, daddy
Can I go with you?
Oh, daddy
Can I go with you?

You pack a suitcase
And take a picture
From the wall
I always knew
This time would come

When I ask how long
You think
You're gonna be
You say
"Eh, this crazy world's
Come undone"

Summer's over
And leaves begin
To fall
And another winter's
On the way
I knew
I wasn't gonna take
This very well
But I'd give everything
To have you here today

Everyday now
They're talking war
I know
This time has been
Like it's never
Been before
We're not talking
About a week or two
Oh, daddy
Can I go with you?
Oh, daddy
Can I go with you?

Oh, daddy
Can I go with you?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Taylor Swift's song "Can I Go With You" are about a little girl who is asking her father to take her with him when he travels due to the impending war. The song begins with the girl acknowledging that a war is coming soon, which is making her worried, and she can see the light in her father's eyes, which shows that even he is concerned about the situation. The girl then addresses her father, asking if she can go with him when he leaves.

The second verse of the song refers to the father packing a suitcase and taking a picture from the wall. The girl had always known that the time would come when her father would have to leave, but it is still difficult for her to accept. The father talks about the uncertainty of how long he will be gone, but he knows that the world has come undone. The following lines reflect on the changing seasons, with summer ending and winter approaching, and the girl knows she won't be able to handle the absence of her father very well. She wishes he could be present for the important moments in her life, even though she understands he tars due to work.

The last verse addresses the ongoing discussions of war and how it feels different than before. The songwriter reveals that the girl is asking her father if she can go with him again. The sad yet hopeful closing lyrics of the song reflect the girl's plea as she begs her father, "Oh, daddy, can I go with you?" It shows the uncertainty of the situation, the fear it causes, and the desire to cling to loved ones amidst uncertain and dangerous times.

@liveandlearnforlife

'I always knew this time would come'. I think this is the right lyrics instead of 'all is new this time we go'.

@naomitsu5169

I love the lyrics of this song. My dad was in the army before I was born, he left when he got with my mom, but I can just imagine how terrible I would be if my dad was still in the army and was always leaving and we would never know if he would live, so i'm glad he didn't stay in the army.

@dizzymisslizzy4569

my dad was deployed in Iraq for a long part of my childhood. it was hard
