Christmases When You Were Mine
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Please take down the mistletoe
'Cause I don't wanna think about that right now
'Cause everything I want is miles away
Snow covered little town
My momma's in the kitchen, worrying about me
Season's greetings, hope you're well
Well I'm doing alright
If you were wondering
Lately I can never tell

I know this shouldn't be a lonely time
But there were Christmases when you were mine

I've been doing fine without you, really
Up until the nights got cold
And everybody's here, except you, baby
Seems like everyone's got someone to hold

But for me it's just a lonely time
'Cause there were Christmases when you were mine

Merry Christmas everybody
That'll have to be something I just say this year
I'll bet you got your mom another sweater
And were your cousins late again
When you were putting up the lights this year
Did you notice one less pair of hands

I know this shouldn't be a lonely time
But there were Christmases when I didn't wonder how you are tonight
'Cause there were Christmases when you were mine

You were mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Taylor Swift's song, Christmases When You Were Mine, depicts a heartbroken individual during Christmastime. The setting described in the song - a snow-covered little town with everyone gathered for Christmas - is a stark contrast to the singer's feelings of loneliness and missing someone who used to be an important part of her life. She addresses this person, who is no longer with her, asking them to take down the mistletoe because she doesn't want to think about them. She tries to convince herself that she's doing alright without them, but she's not sure. The holidays bring back memories of the times when they were together, and it's hard for her to ignore the fact that she's alone now.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the loneliness that the singer is feeling. She knows that Christmastime is not supposed to be a lonely time, but there were times when the person she's missing now was with her. Despite her efforts to move on from the relationship, she's reminded of the happier times they shared together, and it's hard for her to let go of those memories.

The second verse shows that the singer is aware that the person she's missing is not spending Christmas with her. She wonders if he's spending it with his family, and if he got his mom another sweater as a gift. She imagines him putting up Christmas lights but notices one less pair of hands. She acknowledges that Christmas will not be the same now that they're not together.

Overall, the song explores the pain of missing someone during the holidays and nostalgia for the past. It highlights how even though the holidays are supposed to be a happy time, not everyone is filled with joy during that time of the year.

I feel for you people of Mexico!

What a disastrous Christmas you had.

Just remember... You will be missed... The south will miss you too...

Imagine: trumps plague he speaks of: extremely hard working Mexicans... Fleeing their country... To a country of safety... And out working the American people in an attempt to earn their green card and a safe place... Seeing adversity... Yet not giving up... With all the adversity they saw... Still having resilient energy to rise... More energy... More determination... Yet at a disadvantage of adversity... Yet stronger than the American people...Doesn't it sound like an inspiring story?

An inspiring fabric of humanity: the Mexican PEOPLE... Who came to America and saw tough tough adversity ... And kicked ass! Yet never gave up... Who were at a disadvantage yet out shined...

In my mind you earned your green card.

What does America really want then? People in their country who are not as strong? More lazy?

You were a threat to their laziness.

The Mexican people who came to America: worked incredibly hard for pennies in the south.

The African slaves in history: worked incredibly hard for pennies and made the south rich.

See any similarities?

Now, the south says... Get out slaves.

You will be missed.

And realize: you earned your green card.

Think of it like this: population does rise... Babies are born in America. How hard will they work?

Think of those Mexican people as that... Population rising... As rises with new births within our country... That population rising and out working others.

Hmm... If it were you child... They would be hailed in America for resiliency and hard tough work... But since they were from another country... Spit on...

This song is perfect to listen this year, 2020, because a lot of people can't meet their families and friends, especially if they are from a different country
