Closure
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been a long time
And seeing the shape of your name
Still spells out pain
It wasn't right
The way it all went down
Looks like you know that now

Yes, I got your letter
Yes, I'm doing better
It cut deep to know ya
Right to the bone
Yes, I got your letter
Yes, I'm doing better
I know that it's over
I don't need your closure
Your closure

Don't treat me like some situation that needs to be handled
I'm fine with my spite
And my tears
And my beers and my candles
I can feel you smoothing me over

Yes, I got your letter
Yes, I'm doing better
It cut deep to know ya
Right to the bone
Yes, I got your letter
Yes, I'm doing better
I know that it's over
I don't need your closure
Your closure
Your closure
Your closure

I know I'm just a
Wrinkle in your new life
Staying friends
Would iron it out so nice
Guilty, guilty reaching out across the sea
That you put between you and me
But it's fake
And it's oh so unnecessary

Yes, I got your letter
Yes, I'm doing better
It cut deep to know ya
Right to the bone
Yes, I got your letter
Yes, I'm doing better
I know that it's over
I don't need your closure, closure

Overall Meaning

The song "Closure" by Taylor Swift is a moving ballad that speaks of the aftermath of heartbreak and the need for closure. The lyrics describe the singer's feelings towards an ex-lover, emphasizing the pain that still lingers despite the amount of time that has passed since their break-up. The shape of the ex's name still spells out pain, and the singer acknowledges that it's not how things were supposed to end.

The chorus of the song talks about the letter the singer received from the ex, acknowledging that it cut deep to know them right to the bone. The singer emphasizes that they don't need the ex's closure and that they are fine with their spite, tears, beers, and candles, rejecting the idea of being handled as a situation that needs to be resolved. The bridge is a direct address to the ex, stating that staying friends and trying to smooth things over would be fake and unnecessary.

The song as a whole is a testament to the raw emotional impact of heartbreak and the need for people to find their own closure. Taylor Swift's lyrics evoke a sense of pain, frustration, and ultimately resilience that people can relate to and find comfort in.

This is the poetic version of “We Are Never Getting Back Together”.

@aditikhulbe

i feel like everyone is sleeping on this song and here i am- this song might me by fav lol. i ve been listening to it non stop and now i did a cover on my guitar as well. this was a little weird and difficult to play and sing at the same time because of its time signature but i guess that is what made it more challenging. if you have the time, please check it out... you wont regret it, i promise ! it would mean alot to me. if not, that is alright, i get it <3 btw happy 2021!

@TotallyHuman

Nah, that song is about a guy who can't make up his mind. This song is about an abusive p** who wants her to say they're 'still friends' for his guilt and the media.

@piscis210

holy shit you're right lol
