"Our Song" was part of Taylor Swift's self-titled debut album, which went Platinum on June 7, 2007. This made the 17-year-old Swift the first female solo artist to write or co-write every song on a Platinum-selling debut album. The album eventually went 7x Platinum.
"Our Song" was #1 for six weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart. This placed Swift in a four-way tie for second place on the list of the longest-running #1 songs by solo female artists in the history of this chart.
The record is held by Connie Smith, who spent eight weeks at #1 in 1964-65 with "Once A Day." Immediately before Swift reached the summit on the Hot Country Songs chart, Carrie Underwood reigned for three weeks with "So Small." This nine-week string of #1 songs by solo female artists is the longest in the history of the chart. Connie Smith's run with "Once A Day" was both preceded and succeeded at the top by solo male artist recordings.
At the 2008 CMT Music Awards, this won the video of the year award, plus female video of the year.
When this reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart on the chart week of December 22, 2007, Swift became the youngest performer ever to write and sing a chart-topping Country single.
Swift recalled: "I just sat down one day with my guitar and got in a groove, and went with it. I like to write about how music affects people, and this was fun to write because it's about a couple who DOESN'T have a song. I like the banjo and you really can't go wrong with banjo. I wanted it to be last on the album, because the last line of the chorus is 'play it again'. Let's hope people take it as a hint to go ahead and play the album again. Haha!"
In an interview with America Online (AOL), Taylor Swift was asked if there was a true story behind this song. The teenage country singer replied: "I wrote this song in my freshman year of high school for my ninth grade talent show. I was sitting there thinking, 'I've gotta write an upbeat song that's gonna relate to everyone.' And at that time, I was dating a guy and we didn't have a song. So I wrote us one, and I played it at the show. Months later, people would come up to me and say, 'I loved that song that you played.' And then they'd start singing lines of it back to me. They'd only heard it once, so I thought, 'There must be something here!'"
In an interview with Blender magazine, Swift said that this song was written about the same guy as in "Tim McGraw." She said that his name is Drew, and one night in 2008 when she was going out, he was in her driveway. She said, "It would have been really poetic and romantic if he showed up right after my album released, but it's been two years. I told him, 'It's really nice to see you. But you're too late.'"

In the front seat of his car
He's got a one-hand feel on the steerin' wheel
The other on my heart
I look around, turn the radio down
He says, "Baby, is somethin' wrong?"
I say, "Nothin', I was just thinkin'
How we don't have a song"
Our song is the slammin' screen door
Sneakin' out late, tappin' on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date, "Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said amen
Askin' God if he could play it again
I was walkin' up the front porch steps
After everything that day
Had gone all wrong, had been trampled on
And lost and thrown away
Got to the hallway, well on my way
To my lovin' bed
I almost didn't notice all the roses
And the note that said
Our song is the slammin' screen door
Sneakin' out late, tappin' on your window
When we're on the phone and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh
The first date, "Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said amen
Askin' God if he could play it again
Da-da-da, da
I've heard every album, listened to the radio
Waited for somethin' to come along
That was as good as our song
'Cause our song is the slammin' screen door
Sneakin' out late, tappin' on his window
When we're on the phone and he talks real slow
'Cause it's late and his mama don't know
Our song is the way he laughs
The first date, "Man, I didn't kiss him, and I should have"
And when I got home, 'fore I said amen
Askin' God if he could play it again
Play it again
Oh, yeah
Oh, oh, yeah
I was ridin' shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car
I grabbed a pen and an old napkin
And I wrote down our song
The lyrics of Taylor Swift's "Our Song" tell the story of the memories shared between two young lovers. The song opens with the singer riding shotgun with her hair undone in the front seat of her boyfriend's car, reflecting on their relationship. The boyfriend has one hand on the steering wheel and the other on her heart, which reflects the connection they share. As she looks around, she turns the radio down, and the boyfriend asks if something is wrong. She tells him she was just thinking about how they don't have a song. He then replies by saying that their song is everything that they do together, from the slammin' screen door to sneakin' out late, tappin' on the window to talking slow on the phone. The chorus reveals that their song is the way she laughs, the first date, and when she gets home, praying to God that he plays it again.

@troublesqueen
To all the people who said she "sold" herself to mainstream music and she's turning into miley cyrus:
1. she has clothes on and doesn't lick anything/ doesn't anything vulgar, dirty or nasty in her videos. how can you say she's turning into miley?
2. just because she decided to bo for pop music it doesn't mean her songs are bad. the sonngs in the album 1989 are great and I think the album's quality is better than some of her old albums (and I've been listeting to her songs since 2007, I looooved her old songs)
3. she grew up, people, you should do too instead of wasting your time hating on a girl in the youtube comment section
4. she likes pop music, she always has. she isn't selling anything, just doing what she loves
5. the way she looks now (her short hair, her fashion style, the make up she wears) is WAY classier now than in 2007/08. I loved her even back then, but she looked like the typical american blonde barbie doll, now she's so much more real
GROW UP
