Rain
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rain, he wanted it comfortable
I wanted that pain
He wanted a bride
I was making my own name
Chasing that fame
He stayed the same
All of me changed like midnight
My town was a wasteland
Full of cages, full of fences
Pageant queens and big pretenders
But for some it was paradise

My boy was a montage
A slow-motion love potion
Jumping off things in the ocean
I broke his heart 'cause he was nice
He was sunshine, I was midnight

Rain, he wanted it comfortable
I wanted that pain
He wanted a bride
I was making my own name
Chasing that fame
He stayed the same
All of me changed like midnight

It came like a postcard
Picture perfect, shiny family
Holiday peppermint candy
But for him it's every day

So I peered through a window
A deep portal, time travel
All the love we unraveled
And the life I gave away
'Cause he was sunshine, I was midnight

Rain, he wanted it comfortable
I wanted that pain
He wanted a bride
I was making my own name
Chasing that fame
He stayed the same
All of me changed like midnight

Rain, he wanted it comfortable
I wanted that pain
He wanted a bride
I was making my own name
Chasing that fame
He stayed the same
All of me changed like midnight

I guess sometimes we all get
Just what we wanted, just what we wanted
And he never thinks of me
Except when I'm on TV

I guess sometimes we all get
Some kind of haunted, some kind of haunted
And I never think of him

Except on midnights like this
(Midnight's like this, midnight's like this)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Taylor Swift’s song “Rain” speak of a longing for someone who is no longer present in the singer’s life. The first verse discusses the reluctance to revisit memories of the past - this person made the singer laugh and they know the way to their door, but the singer isn’t willing to go back in time anymore. In the second verse, Swift seems to be speaking to the universe, asking it to help her find answers about the person she’s missing. She opens her window, perhaps hoping that the rain will bring her lost love back to her.

Swift then moves on to singing about how much she knows this person - she knows them by heart, but they don’t even know where she starts. The third verse is a plea to this person, talking to them as if they are present even though they are not. She tells them to talk to themselves, talk to the tears they’ve shed, and to talk to the person who put them in this situation. She then leaves her window open again, hoping this time her lost love will come back to her. The final verse repeats the opening sentiments - that she could go back to every laugh, but she doesn’t want to anymore.

Overall, the lyrics speak of a deep sense of yearning and loss. The singer is hoping for something that they know may never come back to them, but they are still holding on to the possibility that it might.

blows my mind that she could've just canceled and reimbursed fans but she kept going, what an artist. I'm seasonal taylow swift fan (only 1989 and now karma) but this woman is so talented and strong she gave herself entirely.

@stemikger

I'm impressed. I'm an old man and I'm certainly not her target audience, but the more I know of her, the my I like her as a person and I always liked her music, which is very wide in it's scope.

@charviannep

a song targeted to you age is dear john! give it a listen 🥰🥰

@KA-eu9sy

She's such a trooper. Admire her. She could have gotten really ill being exposed to the rain like that.
