Sad Beautiful Tragic
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long handwritten note
Deep in your pocket
Words, how little they mean
When you're a little too late
I stood right by the tracks
Your face in a locket
Good girls, hopeful they'll be and long they will wait
We had a beautiful magic love there
What a sad beautiful tragic love affair

In dreams
I meet you in warm conversation
We both wake
In lonely beds
In different cities
And time
Is taking its sweet time erasing you
And you've got your demons
And darlin' they all look like me

'Cause we had a beautiful magic love there
What a sad beautiful tragic love affair

(Oh-uh)
(Oh-uh)

Distance, timing
Breakdown, fighting
Silence, the train runs off its tracks
Kiss me, try to fix it
Could you just try to listen?
Hang up, give up
For the life of us we can't get back

A beautiful magic love there
What a sad
Beautiful tragic
Beautiful tragic
Beautiful

What we had a beautiful magic love there (uh-uh)
What a sad beautiful tragic love affair

We had a beautiful magic love there
What a sad beautiful tragic love affair

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song talks about how little words mean when someone is too late. The singer of the song had a lover who she thought was good and hopeful, but unfortunately, they were too late. Despite waiting for them for a long time, the singer realises that it was a sad, beautiful and tragic love affair. In the second verse, the singer dreams of talking to her lover in a warm conversation, but when she wakes up, she realises that they are in different cities and time is taking its sweet time to erase memories of her lover. The singer also mentions that her lover has his demons and they all look like her, implying that the problems that led to the end of their relationship may have been caused by her actions.

In the chorus, the singer repeats that they had a beautiful magic love there, but it was tragic and sad. The last verse talks about the distance, timing, breakdowns, and fighting that led to the end of their relationship. They tried to fix things by kissing and talking, but eventually, they had to hang up and give up. Despite all their efforts, they were unable to get their relationship back on track.
