White Horse
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say you're sorry
That face of an angel
Comes out just when you need it to
As I paced back and forth all this time
'Cause I honestly believed in you
Holding on
The days drag on
Stupid girl
I should have known, I should have known

That I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale
I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain't Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it's too late for you
And your white horse, to come around

Maybe I was naive,
Got lost in your eyes
And never really had a chance
My mistake I didn't know to be in love
You had to fight to have the upper hand
I had so many dreams
About you and me
Happy endings
Now I know

I'm not a princess, this ain't a fairy tale
I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain't Hollywood, this is a small town
I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
Now it's too late for you
And your white horse, to come around

And there you are on your knees
Begging for forgiveness, begging for me
Just like I always wanted but I'm so sorry

'Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale
I'm gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well
This is a big world, that was a small town
There in my rear view mirror disappearing now
And it's too late for you and your white horse
Now it's too late for you and your white horse, to catch me now

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa
Try and catch me now
Oh, it's too late
To catch me now

Overall Meaning

At its core, "White Horse" is a song about disillusionment and heartbreak. The song tells the story of a girl who believed in the fairy tale romance with her partner. However, soon, she realizes that her partner never shared her dreams and was never going to change. She acknowledges that she had been naïve to believe that she was in love without realizing what it would take to maintain a relationship. As she muses on her feelings, she comes to the realization that it's too late for her partner and their white horse to come around as she moves on from their relationship.

The line, "I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairy tale," lends a sense of maturity to the song, indicating that the singer is wiser than she was at the song's beginning. The lyrics are powerful, and Swift sings them with vulnerability, adding a sense of honesty and authenticity to the track. The song's intimate and earnest lyrics resonate with those seeking solace after a failed relationship.

15 Facts you probably didn’t know about Taylor Swift’s White Horse.

1. Taylor wrote this song in the hallway of a Nashville recording studio in her journal.

2. It took 45 minutes to write this song.

3. This song received 2 Grammy Awards; Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performace.

4. Taylor had the intro music and first verse of ‘White Horse’ done before she called Liz Rose to help her with it.

5. Lyrically, the track speaks of disillusionment and pain in a relationship, drawing references to fairytales. "To me, 'White Horse' is about what, in my opinion, is the most heart-breaking part of a break-up – that moment when you realize that all the dreams you had, all those visions you had of being with this person, all that disappears," Taylor said.

6. This song was originally to be put on Taylor’s third album because ‘Fearless’ had its “fair share” of sad songs until the people who worked on Grey’s Anatomy requested Taylor send them a song to play on the show.

7. The lyrics originally said “as I pace back and forth this whole time” instead of “all this time” as well as “this is Holywood” instead of “This is ain’t Hollywood”.

8. Ryan Adams became a Taylor fan when he first heard the song.

9. This song is one of Taylor’s favorite from ‘Fearless’ because she could listen to it a year later and still be sad.

10. Taylor started crying hysterically when she got he call that ‘White Horse’ was going to be on Grey’s Anatomy. She said she had never been that excited.

11. There was a lot of controversy in the Grammy committee surrounding the decision to give Taylor the ‘Best Country Vocal Performance’ award at the 2010 ceremony, but ultimately more voters agreed than disagreed.

12. Once, when Chriss Pratt was at a photoshoot, “White Horse” began playing. He joked as the song began, “Taylor Swift plays in the background as I look longingly pensively out the window.” Then he began singing along to the chorus. He knew all the words.

13. The video was shot in one day. Coincidentally, on the day of filming, it rained heavily, something which Swift was enlightened by, since it corresponded to the video's gloomy and dark feel. Swift said it aided in making the video less colorful lighting-wise, and more fixated on muted tones. The last scenes were more difficult for Swift because they involved crying.

14. This song peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its appearance, along with six other songs, on the chart tied Swift with Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) for the female act to have the most songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week, a record later surpassed by Swift herself when she charted eleven songs at once in 2010.

15. It was certified 2x Platinum in the US, Gold in Australia and Canada
