You Don't Have To Call Me
Taylor Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All this time I was wasting
Hoping you would come around
I've been giving out chances every time
And all you do is let me down
And it's taken me this long
Baby, but I've figured you out
And you thinking we'll be fine again
But not this time around

You don't have to call anymore
I won't pick up the phone
This is the last straw
Don't want to hurt anymore
And you can tell me that you're sorry
But I don't believe you, baby
Like I did before
You're not sorry, no, no, no, no

Looking so innocent
I might believe you if I didn't know
Could have loved you all my life
If you hadn't left me waiting in the cold
And you've got your share of secrets
And I'm tired of being last to know
And now you're asking me to listen
'Cause it's worked each time before

But you don't have to call anymore
I won't pick up the phone
This is the last straw
Don't want to hurt anymore
And you can tell me that you're sorry
But I don't believe you, baby
Like I did before
You're not sorry, no, no
You're not sorry, no, no

You had me crawling for you, honey
And it never would have gone away, no
You used to shine so bright
But I watched all of it fade

So you don't have to call anymore
I won't pick up the phone
This is the last straw
There's nothing left to beg for
And you can tell me that you're sorry
But I don't believe you, baby
Like I did before

You're not sorry, no, no
You're not sorry, no, no

Overall Meaning

In this song, Taylor Swift sings about a romantic relationship that has gone sour due to the other person's repeated mistreatment of her. She laments about how she has been giving chances to the other person over and over again, hoping they would change their ways, but all they do is let her down. Taylor then highlights that she has finally figured out the true character of this person and that this time around things won't be okay like before. She calls this situation the last straw and decides that she won't take the other person's calls anymore. Even if they apologize, she won't believe them like she used to before.

Taylor then confronts the other person for taking advantage of her innocence and leaving her waiting in the cold. She reveals that she is exhausted from always being the last one to know their secrets. The other person tries to talk to her to make things right, but Taylor is done with the relationship and is not willing to put herself through hurt anymore. She accuses the other person of making her crawl when things could have been beautiful between them. Taylor remembers a time when the other person shone so bright but now all that has faded away.
