cardigan
Taylor Swift Lyrics
Vintage tee, brand new phone
High heels on cobblestones
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
Sequin smile, black lipstick
Sensual politics
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you
Dancin' in your Levi's
Drunk under a streetlight
Hand under my sweatshirt
Baby, kiss it better, right
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
A friend to all is a friend to none
Chase two girls, lose the one
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you
Playin' hide-and-seek and
Givin' me your weekends
I, I knew you
Your heartbeat on the High Line
Once in twenty lifetimes, I
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
To kiss in cars and downtown bars
Was all we needed
You drew stars around my scars
But now I'm bleedin'
'Cause I knew you
Steppin' on the last train
Marked me like a bloodstain
I, I knew you
Tried to change the ending
Peter losing Wendy
I, I knew you
Leavin' like a father
Runnin' like water, I
And when you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss
I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs
The smell of smoke would hang around this long
'Cause I knew everything when I was young
I knew I'd curse you for the longest time
Chasing shadows in the grocery line
I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired
And you'd be standin' in my front porch light
And I knew you'd come back to me
You'd come back to me
And you'd come back to me
And you'd come back
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone's bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite

Swift co-wrote the song with its producer Aaron Dessner. "Cardigan" is a slow-burning folk, soft rock and indie rock ballad with stripped-down instrumentals of tender piano, clopping drums and melancholic violins. Lyrically, it sees Swift singing about a comforting romance lost in memories, from the perspective of a woman named Betty, one of the several fictitious characters narrated in Folklore.
The song received critical acclaim, with praise towards the poetic songwriting and laid-back sound. It received nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. Upon release, "Cardigan" debuted at number one on the global Spotify songs chart, receiving over 7.742 million streams, garnering the biggest opening-day for a song by a female artist in 2020. An accompanying music video for the song—written, directed, and styled by Swift—was released alongside the album launch. The dreamy video presents a cottagecore aesthetic and features Swift in three different settings: a cozy cabin in the woods, a magical moss-covered forest and a dark stormy sea, representing different phases of a relationship and her career simultaneously. With the song's debut at the number-one spot of the Billboard Hot 100, Swift scored her sixth number-one single in the United States.

theory:
i believe that this video is kinda like the story of taylor's music career.
when the video starts we see that she's sitting in her house playing music because it's what she loves, then she gets an opportunity (which she gets Through her music) to enter a world which looks shiny and golden and she takes it. she enters a world outside her home and it's beautiful. the sun is shining and the grass is soft, and again, she does what she loves, plays music. she gets an opportunity again, it looks shiny and golden too, and she enters, expecting a world even more wonderful than the one she's in. unfortunately it turns out that she's now in an expansive sea (of trials and difficulties i suppose) with no land (any possible exit or solution) in sight. a storm is raging. she finds only her piano (her music) can save her so she clutches onto that and soon, there's the shiny golden opportunity again, this time an opportunity to get out of the sea and she takes it. she is brought back to her home, and everything is the same except a woollen cardigan on her piano stool. a cardigan (her experience and strength, a shield) to protect her from the cold (hardships and hate i suppose?) and we see that she's finally at peace. assured and protected in her home with her music.
to be honest, this video can also be seen as any time of difficulty experienced after we start taking risks, whether in career, or love, or anything, and how we will (with time) have a shield around us, and we'll be stronger and more protected to go forward.
i love that the willow video picks up from where this one ends and just like this one symbolises her career, that one symbolises her love life. :))))
thank you for reading :)
