March
Tchaikovsky P.I. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And we're dying with every step we take,
We're dying with every breath we make,
And all fall in line
A stranger's back is all I see,
He's only a few feet in front of me,
And all look left and right sometimes,
No one looks up anymore,
'Cause you might get a raindrop in your eye,
And heaven forbid, they see you cry,
As we fall in line
And about this time of every year,
The Line will go to the ocean pier,
And walk right off into the sea,
Then we fall asleep
As we near the end of land,
And our ocean graves are just beyond the sand,
I ask myself the question, why
I fall in line
Then out of the corner of my eye,
I see a spaceship in the sky,
And hear a voice inside my head
Follow me instead
Follow me instead
Follow me
Then the wages of war will start
Inside my head with my counterpart
And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase
This line's the only way
Then I start down the sand
My eyes are focused on the end of land
But again the voice inside my head
Says, follow me instead
Follow me instead
Follow me
Follow me instead
Follow me instead
Follow me instead
Follow me instead
Follow me instead
Take me up
Seal the door
I don't want to march here anymore
I realize that this line is dead
So I'll follow you instead
So then you put me back in my place
So I might start another day
And once again, I will be
In a march to the sea
The song, "March to the Sea" by Tchaikovsky P.I., tells a story of conformity, symbolism of falling in line, feeling lost in the crowd, and ultimately realizing the futility of it all. The opening lines "There's miles of land in front of us, and we're dying with every step we take" contribute to the overall atmosphere of hopelessness and inner-conflict within the subject's mind. The "line" being referred to is indicative of a larger social context, where people mindlessly follow societal norms to fit in, resulting in a loss of individuality. The metaphor of "drowning" in the ocean is a reflection of the depths of despair and confusion that the subject experiences.
The refrain "follow me instead" represents a longing for a form of escapism from the regimented lifestyle. The line "seal the door, I don't want to march here anymore," depicts the subject's desire to take an alternate path, which is accompanied by an emotional conflict, as suggested by the line, "The wages of war will start inside my head with my counterpart." The final lines, "So then you put me back in my place, so I might start another day, and once again, I will be in a march to the sea" highlight how societal norms cannot be escaped completely, and that every day presents new battles.
Line by Line Meaning
There's miles of land in front of us,
We have a long journey ahead of us
And we're dying with every step we take,
The journey is taking a toll on us and we are losing strength
We're dying with every breath we make,
The struggle is exhausting us both physically and emotionally
And all fall in line
Despite the difficulties, we continue to follow the same path
A stranger's back is all I see,
I am so focused on the path ahead that I can only see the person in front of me
He's only a few feet in front of me,
The line is so tightly packed that there is not much space between each person
And all look left and right sometimes,
Occasionally people glance around, but mostly they stay focused on the path ahead
But all fall in line
Despite the occasional glance around, everyone eventually returns to the same path
No one looks up anymore,
People are so focused on the path ahead that they forget to look around
'Cause you might get a raindrop in your eye,
People fear any external distractions that may alter their path
And heaven forbid, they see you cry,
Emotions are suppressed, and crying is seen as a weakness
As we fall in line
Despite the emotional suppression, we continue to follow the same path
And about this time of every year,
At a particular time each year, something changes
The Line will go to the ocean pier,
The path leads to the ocean pier
And walk right off into the sea,
People blindly follow the path and head straight into the ocean
Then we fall asleep
People submit to the supposed inevitability of the path and cease to resist
As we near the end of land,
We are getting closer to the supposed end
And our ocean graves are just beyond the sand,
People blindly believe that the end of the path leads to their graves
I ask myself the question, why
People begin to question the path and its supposedly inevitable end
I fall in line
Despite questioning the path, people still continue to follow it
Then out of the corner of my eye,
Something unexpected catches my attention
I see a spaceship in the sky,
A symbol of something other than the path catches my attention
And hear a voice inside my head
Internal conflict begins to occur
Follow me instead
An internal voice suggests following something other than the path
Then the wages of war will start
Internal conflict intensifies
Inside my head with my counterpart
Internal conflict is happening between different parts of me
And the emotionless marchers will chant the phrase
Despite the internal conflict, others are still blindly following the path
This line's the only way
Others believe that the path is the only option
Then I start down the sand
A realization or decision sets me on a new path
My eyes are focused on the end of land
I am still driven to reach a supposed end to the journey
But again the voice inside my head
Internal conflict resurfaces
Says, follow me instead
The internal voice urges me to continue on a new path
Take me up
New direction involves upward movement
Seal the door
Close and seal the door on the old direction
I don't want to march here anymore
A clear decision to leave behind the old path
I realize that this line is dead
A realization that the old path is leading nowhere
So I'll follow you instead
A conviction to follow a new path
So then you put me back in my place
I am still subject to external forces in the world
So I might start another day
Each day is a new opportunity to follow the chosen path
And once again, I will be
A reminder that there is always choice and change in life
In a march to the sea
The unknown lies ahead, but it is not blindly followed
