One Reason
Tea Leaf Green Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At least we'll get a story from it.
Let's go find a nice place to sit.
Where we can spit in the wind;
Confess all our sins,
Before we turn oursevles in.

We must be out of our wits,
Like a temptress in love.
We're going to pull down the bridge,
Just to watch it come tumbling down.

Oh, yeah...
All right...

Just give me one reason.
Just give me one - check it, get it now.
Just give me one reason.
Check it, get it, oh I'll take you all down.

Confess to doctors not priests,
Who you gonna trust or believe?
Leave the priests to the recently deceased,
And let the rest of us get on with our lives

We could get that bullet out. There's a man I've been hearin' about.
And for a nominal fee,
He'll do anything anything we need.
Oh yeah, all right

Chorus

Before we go there my friend.
Tell me, where have you hidden the cash?
Tell me where you stashed it,
Before the life leaks out of that hole in your brest...

There's a hole in your breast...
There's a hole in your breast.

Chorus

Overall Meaning

The song “One Reason” by Tea Leaf Green, has a sense of self-awareness that tells a story of two individuals making a decision that may ultimately lead to ruin. The lyrics, “At least we’ll get a story from it. Let’s go find a nice place to sit. Where we can spit in the wind; confess all our sins, before we turn ourselves in,” suggests that even if the outcome of their decision is not desirable, at least they will have a story to tell. They want to experience everything before they turn themselves in, before it’s too late. They then go on to say, “We’re going to pull down the bridge, just to watch it come tumbling down,” indicating that they are willing to take destruction for the sake of an experience.

The chorus, “Just give me one reason. Just give me one - check it, get it now. Just give me one reason. Check it, get it, oh, I'll take you all down,” can be interpreted as a challenge or a dare. The individual is asking for a reason to reconsider their decision, but they also suggest that they are willing to take everyone down with them. The lyrics, “Confess to doctors not priests, who you gonna trust or believe? Leave the priests to the recently deceased, and let the rest of us get on with our lives,” could imply that they do not believe in traditional religion and would rather seek help from a doctor.

Overall, the lyrics suggest that the individuals are at a point of desperation and may be making decisions irrationally. The idea is to seek experiences and make the most of their lives before they turn themselves in. Tea Leaf Green touches on the idea of living life to the fullest and gaining life experiences, even if they have dire consequences.

We should find a comfortable place to sit and discuss what we are about to do.

If your reason is not convincing enough, I am still willing to go through with our plans even if it means negative consequences for everyone involved.

Confess to doctors not priests,
We should seek help from medical professionals instead of religious figureheads when dealing with personal issues.

Who you gonna trust or believe?
It can be difficult to determine who to trust or believe when seeking guidance or advice.

Leave the priests to the recently deceased,
Religious figures may be better suited to helping those who have passed on instead of the living.

And let the rest of us get on with our lives.

We could get that bullet out. There's a man I've been hearing about.
There is someone who can potentially help us with our problem, and we should seek their assistance.

And for a nominal fee, he'll do anything anything we need.
The person who can help us is willing to do whatever is necessary, but it will come at a cost.

Before we go there my friend.
Before we take action, we need to consider all options and their potential consequences.

Tell me where you stashed it,
We need to be honest with each other about any information or resources we may have hidden away.

Before the life leaks out of that hole in your breast...
We need to act quickly before time runs out and we lose our chance to fix the problem.

There's a hole in your breast...
This line serves both as a reminder of the urgency of the situation and as a metaphor for the problems and issues we need to fix.

When original drummer broke his foot bad and had to sit out with Apollo Sunshine dude filling in.. the band went down. Scottie eventually heeled and came back but the band was too nice and kept the substitute drummer and implemented a duo drum. Tea Leaf Green could have been on the cover of Rolling Stone at one time. The duo drums + original bass player eventually quitting (likely because he had a family and needed to get a real job) was the demise of the band. But before all that shit, Tea Lea Green was the best band / live show in the game for a few good years.
