The meaning of the song if you didn't get it:
My lover's got humor. She's the giggle at a funeral. - My lover (the church) has a sense of humor. She (the church) laughs when people die.
Knows everybody's disapproval. I should've worshiped her sooner. - (the church) knows everyone disapproves of me, hates me. I should have worshipped (sacrificed) my life to her (the church) sooner.
If the Heavens ever did speak. She's the last true mouthpiece. - If God ever was real and spoke to humans. She (the church) is the last sign that God exists.
Every Sunday's getting more bleak. A fresh poison each week. - Every Sunday, the day when people go to church, is getting more dark and painful to live through. A fresh layer of poison and pain is applied at the church every week.
"We were born sick", you heard them say it. - "We were born gay", you heard the church say we have a disease.
My church offers no absolutes. She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom". - My church doesn't allow any impurity and is merciless against those who are considered impure. She (the church) tells me "The bedroom is meant for worshipping God, not for having gay sex."
The only Heaven I'll be sent to. Is when I'm alone with you. - I'm not allowed in heaven because I'm gay. That's why the only heaven (joy, happiness, paradise) I will ever experience is when I am alone with my gay partner.
I was born sick, but I love it. Command me to be well. - I was born gay and I'm proud of it. Force me to be cured.
A-, Amen, Amen, Amen. Take me to church. - Spiritual affirmation. Take me to the church to be sacrificed as a cure for my homosexuality.
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies. I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife. - I will be slaughtered and sacrificed like a dog, because the church doesn't consider LGBT people human beings, at the shrine of your lies - referring to the altar and the church glorifying the lies of the bible. I will tell you that I'm gay, and you can prepare the weapon you will use to slaughter me for it.
Offer me that deathless death. Good God, let me give you my life. - Offer me access to death without death, also known as heaven, let me into heaven. Good God, murder me and sacrifice me.
If I'm a pagan of the good times. My lover's the sunlight. - If I'm an outcast from today's society. My lover (the church) is the sunlight that will burn me to ashes.
To keep the Goddess on my side. She demands a sacrifice. - To appease the Goddess (the church) and stay on her good side. She (the church) demands that my impure, homosexual life is ended by being sacrificed to God, referring to homophobic biblical verses like Leviticus 20:13.
Drain the whole sea. Get something shiny. - Referring to draining the Holy See, the Vatican. Destroy the Vatican and take back the money and gold that their temples are coated with.
Something meaty for the main course. That's a fine looking high horse. - The Vatican, and grandiose cathedrals and churches in general, are a rich and meaty meal for the people. That's a fine looking high horse, also known as moral high-ground. This critiques the moral high-ground the church holds over people, by hoarding wealth and building gold-plated churches while telling the worshippers of God to be humble and immaterialist. And by preaching love and tolerance despite discriminating against LGBT people.
What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful. - What does the Vatican have to offer to people? We have a lot of poor and vulnerable believers of God who are starving because of all the money the church has fraudulently scammed and stolen from its believers to line their own greedy pockets.
That looks tasty. That looks plenty. This is hungry work. - Referring to butchering the Vatican, and all wealthy churches and cathedrals in general, and feeding (returning) it to the poor and starving whose money was used to build them.
Chorus repeated.
No masters or kings when the ritual begins. There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin. - It's irrelevant who you are, if you're homosexual, you're still being sacrificed in the ritual. There is nothing sweeter or more innocent than our gentle sin of homosexuality, referring to there being nothing wrong with homosexuality.
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene. Only then I am human. Only then I am clean. - In the horrible acts of violence and oppression that religious people carry out against LGBT people in the name of God. Only then, when I have been murdered and sacrificed to God, I am considered a clean human being instead of a dog.

Irish solo artist Andrew Hozier Byrne, a.k.a. Hozier, created a stir when he released “Take Me To Church” in 2013.
Lyrically, the single is one large metaphor comparing a lover to religion :
“Take me to church /
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies /
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife /
Offer me that deathless death /
Good God, let me give you my life.”
The singer-songwriter defined the meaning of the piece : “Sexuality, and sexual orientation - regardless of orientation - is just natural. An act of sex is one of the most human things. But an organization like the Church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation - that it is sinful, or that it offends God. The song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love.”
Hozier pointed out that “Take Me To Church” IS NOT AN ATTACK ON FAITH. He explained : “Coming from Ireland, obviously, there’s a bit of a cultural hangover from the influence of the Church. You’ve got a lot of people walking around with a heavy weight in their hearts and a disappointment […] that [carry] from generation to generation. So the song is just about that - it’s an assertion of self, reclaiming humanity back for something that is most natural and worthwhile.”
To date, this is the highest-charting track in the Hot 100’s history with the word “CHURCH” in its title. Culture Club’s “Church of the Poison Mind” (1983) was the previous best.
Hozier performed the oeuvre at the 2015 Grammy Awards ceremony, where it was nominated for Song of the Year. Toward the end, he was joined by Scottish icon Annie Lennox, who duetted with him before going into a rousing rendition of “I Put A Spell On You” (2014).
