Change
Tears for Fears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You walked in to the room
I just had to laugh
The face you wore was cool
You were a photograph

When it's all too late
It's all too late
I did not have the time
I did not have the nerve
To ask you how you feel
Is this what you deserve

When it's all too late
It's all too late

Change
You can change
Change
You can change

And something on your mind
Became a point of view
I lost your honesty
You lost the life in you

When it's all too late
It's all too late

We walk and talk in time
I walk and talk in two
Where does the end of me
Become the start of you

When it's all too late
It's all too late

Change
You can change
Change
You can change

What has happened to
The friend that I once knew
Has he gone away

When it's all too late
It's all too late

Change

Change
You can change

Change
You can change

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tears for Fears’s song “Change” convey a sense of regret and missed opportunities in a relationship. The singer is reflecting on a past encounter with someone who they found intriguing but failed to act upon. The line “The face you wore was cool, you were a photograph” suggests that they were attracted to the person’s image or persona but did not get to know them on a deeper level. The repeated refrain “When it’s all too late, it’s all too late” emphasizes the idea that time has passed and the opportunity for a connection has been lost.

As the song progresses, the singer seems to be grappling with the idea of change and the potential for growth in a relationship. The line “Something on your mind became a point of view” suggests that the other person has gone through a transformation that the singer may not understand or agree with. The line “I lost your honesty, you lost the life in you” suggests a disconnect or loss of trust between the two individuals.

The final verse includes the lines “What has happened to the friend that I once knew? Has he gone away?” which reinforces the idea that the relationship has shifted or ended. The repeated refrain of “Change, you can change” suggests that the singer is open to the possibility of growth and evolution, but it may be too late for this particular connection.

Overall, “Change” is a melancholy yet hopeful reflection on the complexities of relationships and the importance of taking action before time runs out.

Sounds as good today as it did in 1983! A great xylophone rock song, who knew!?

Quite exceptional. I hate xylophones in general, but here I really like it a lot.

This song just oozes the early 80s. Fantastic. It never gets old. Don't ever change ....

If there is someone who to my taste, marked what the eighties were, they are Tear for Fears ... My favorite group ever. Roland and Curt ..., fabulous !!!

I was in high school during the eighties and I remember many of friends because of their favorite bands. As it happens, one of my dearest high school buddies was a HUGE TFF fan. We grew apart, but whenever I listen to a TFF song, I smile and get filled with nostalgia for my buddy and our years together as teenagers.
