Closest Thing To Heaven
Tears for Fears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

28 days of rain
Flashfloods in Feburary
Back in our boats again
Bathwater and the baby
What am I gonna do?
There's been a lot of drinking
Looking at ghosts of you
While all the world is sinking
Ten thousand miles into the atmosphere
My body shakes, is there a welcome here?

Closest thing to heaven
How do you do it?
Closest thing to heaven, to heaven

Throw your arms 'round the world
Make love your destination
Here we go, boys and girls
Act like a generation
Give me that ball and chain
By now it must be hurting
Dragging your feet again
Just like a beast of burden
When one and one and one make two
I know I'm high because I've captured you
Yeah

Closest thing to heaven
Yes, you
Closest thing to heaven, to heaven

Look the world right in the eye
Eat the countries that are making millions
Sweet as homemade apple pie
Save the crumbs for all the starving millions

Closest thing to heaven
Closest thing to heaven
How do you do it?
Closest thing to heaven

Hey
Closest thing to heaven

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Closest Thing to Heaven by Tears for Fears are metaphorical and somewhat cryptic in their meaning, yet alluding to themes of post-apocalyptic imagery and the idea of finding something akin to salvation in a world on the brink of collapse. The first verse describes the consequences of an extreme weather event -- 28 days of rain and flash floods in February -- which have forced the singers to take to their boats once again. The line "there's been a lot of drinking" hints at the desperation and isolation of the situation. They are stuck in the past, their memories playing like ghosts while the world around them is sinking.

Great, epic, true to form tears for fears. Such an underrated track. Amazing melody.
Hope you're resting peacefully Brittany Murphy....

@Zeppelin512

This song should be bigger than it is. Very underrated.

+Zeppelin512 But You and me, we're out of time...

@denzil4

totally agree with you on that one. This song in my opinion rates as one of their finest. You say this song was very underrated I think Tears For Fears were as well. If you look back at their career there's a lot of what I call classics. Suffer The Children, Pale Shelter, Woman In Chains and Change but to name a few. They all sound as good today as they did over 30 years ago. Very unique sound and great vocals .

@danaedgerly

Zeppelin512 the band in general is underrated

@simplynochannel

Agreed. Although the song was Tears for Fears' first UK top 40 hit since "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" in 1995

@cotoramm

When the song was released was super well recieved by the audience, same with the album, and more with Curt´s return. The problem is now, with the social networks, not many people knows this material, and in general on YT, Saddly the New generations believes that if you cant lots of views youre not "important" or "popular". But believe me, in his release time, this song was basically in every place. Other example was with Elemental, in their time was super popular, even Cold and Goodnight Song was in every places, MTV, Radio stations, even illegal music stores lol.

Having bought all of the TFF catalogue, this video is a wonderful memorial to the late Brittany Murphy. A beautiful young woman gone to heaven far too soon. It is impossible not to wonder how different her life would have been if she had stayed clear of Hollywood. But then we wouldn’t have this video. Maybe. 🌹✨
