Los Reyes Católicos
Tears for Fears Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When time is like a needle
And night is the longest day
A home is a cathedral
A place where a king can pray

Ghosts all gone
Ghosts all gone
To another plane
Los Reyes Catolicos [Repeat: x4]

Ghosts all gone
Ghosts all gone
To another plane
Los Reyes Catolicos
Los Reyes Catolicos

A home is like a castle
A place where a king can reign
Los Reyes Catolicos
Raoul and The Kings of Spain
Ghosts all gone

Ghosts all gone

Ghosts all gone
To another plane

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Los Reyes Catolicos by Tears for Fears introduce a powerful metaphorical concept of time and its significance in human lives. The lyrics convey the idea that time is fleeting, and as long as it exists, life seems to be a complicated journey. The line, "When time is like a needle, and night is the longest day," conveys the slow pace of time where each second feels like an eternity. The song has a reflective tone that expresses the emotional turmoil of the singer, who is nostalgic about the past and uncertain about the future.

The lyrics further emphasize the importance of a home, which provides solace to the soul. A home is a sanctuary where a person can find peace and pray like a king in a cathedral. The lyrics compare a home to a castle and a king's reign, depicting how people can create a world of their own within the confines of their houses. The title, Los Reyes Catolicos, is a Spanish term that translates to "Catholic Kings." This reference points to the idea of royalty and religion, further emphasizing the metaphorical concept of a home being a sanctuary.

@Maury Castellanos Raoul is the real birthname of Roland given by his father before his mother decided to change it to make it more "common" in England.

Hence, it is one first nod to the estrangement from his Spanish-Basque and Argentinian roots.

It is also the name of his first son, as a way to "symbolically repairing" this forgotten cultural legacy and maybe to pay a little tribute to his father.

The Kings of Spain is another nod to Roland's father, George Orzabal de la Quintana, who was often ill so when he could bond with his children, he often told them they shared a link with the royal family of Spain.

Being confirmed or not, it has marked Roland deeply and he may have made of this fact a sort of self-derision running joke. But as the Catholic Monarchs were a predominant part of the glorious (and less glorious) rise of power and spreading of the Spanish influence all over the world, Roland must have considered it conveyed well the whole thematics this personal album dealt with.

Los Reyes Católicos, being sing on a melancholic and haunting tone, may refer to the añoranza : sadness you feel when remembering the privation or loss of loved ones, past and memories. As Roland crossed back then a troubled period (both artistically and conjugally), it matches.

An absolute classic album. Higly underrated album that has a few gems. Alan Griffiths is one super talented multi instrumentalist and composer who helped Roland come out of his shell in the aftermath of Curt Smith's first departure. Pure work of genius 9/10

es un orgullo tener sangre española como roland orzabal, me enamore de esta canción tan folclórica para la madre patria.

Lembro dele entrando no palco e começando o show magnifíco com esta música no Gigantinho em Porto Alegre em 1996. Putz! O tempo passa muito rápido. Longa vida ao Roland. R.I.P. Alan Griffiths.

Tears for Fears est un groupe immense, à mon avis très sous-estimé. C'est, musicalement et vocalement, peut-être le plus créatif de l'histoire. Ce morceau sublime en est une éclatante démonstration.
